Can someone let me know if there is a minimum contract period to enter and if it is easy to exit one when set up if circumstances change? I am needing a live-in DH but it is likely that my partner will join me within the year and he will not be comfortable with live in help.

If it's a foreign domestic helper you are talking about then there is only one contract term - 2 years. No other option. Either party may terminate the contract but must fulfil their legal obligations if they do that. There are information sheets available on both the Immigration Dept and Labour Dept websites that should be of help to you as a first-time employer of a domestic helper. I can post the links if you need them but not until Monday.

Thanks! I had a look on the website, but I was getting a bit confused. I am also thinking that a part-time helper might be an option. From other threads posted I am guessing that this would require the person to be a local resident(?) Doesn't bother me if they are local, but can a part time DH look after children? I don't want to be doing anything illegal.

Yes, PT helpers can do whatever you want them to do - provided they agree to it.

And perhaps when he finds out how much easier life is with a helper he will change his views....
