Am experiencing a bit of frustration (understatement) trying to get some part time home help. Have taken heed of the ever scarier government warnings (complete with 2 hotlines for people to nark on their neighbours) about hiring "other people's foreign domestic helpers" to do part time work. Posted an ad in the Classifieds of this website -- got 6 replies, all from FDHs who say they have a contract but their employer allows them to do outside work. Have contacted several part time home help agencies, including those who advertise on this forum. Guess what? They don't have anybody available right now. I phoned two other agencies from a list given to me by the Community Advice Bureau, and they were no longer in operation. Am waiting to hear from the Employee Retraining Board, to which I applied to hire a local person. What is the solution for someone who does not need or want to hire a full time live in FDH? With all the tightening up on non-local freelancers and part-timers, is there really local manpower to fill the gap? I guess this is turning into a rant -- any thoughts, anyone?

Yes sure...but finding one on your own is going to be tough. There are plenty of cleaning companies out there now. They may be a bit (from about 10% to double) more expensive than paying an illegal by hour, but they all come with some added benefits. One of the things that finally pushed me to full time FDH was that my part timers would pass my key around to who had free time to show up...and I cant tell you how many times people would move away or whatever and just return the key with no notice, leaving me with all the chores and no help with no notice.
With the companies they send out a staff and supervise the work for you. They are insured as well so you have some protection and don't need to hassle.

Thanks for your reply chefcrsh -- I was resigned to using these companies -- but they don't have anyone available to come and work for me.

hi - it does exist if the cleaner has permanent ID. We used one with a perm ID card for $60 an hour when we first arrived. I can see if i still have her number if you like?

Hi Claire - I'm in Repulse Bay and no Cantonese yet.
Brit, I would be grateful for the number.

There are a number of Social Enterprises which offer domestic cleaning but they usually stick to an area close to base. And I don't believe RB is such an area.
But here is a list of the SEs which offer cleaning.

You will probably have to pay a premium because of travel costs and time.

You can register your ad in Labour Department Website. Generally local Chinese, Permanent ID holders respond to the advertisement. In this way you can find somebody living near your area and that may also work out to be cheaper than $60/hr.

Hi! mamadavid. I've got a Filipina friend that is a HK resident (married to a local) and can do legal part time work. Only problem is she lives in the New Territories. If you're really interested, kindly state how many hours, and days you need her help so that I could ask her if she'll be interested to work for you. She charges $60/hour and she is really great.

Thanks everyone for all your helpful advice. Mochie99, I'm afraid the travel would be too much for your friend -- I need 3 hours at a time, preferably 5 days a week, and she would spend that much time again travelling.

Yes, Mamadavid, I agree with you. She might accept it if the working hours would be longer. Anyway, good luck in your search.

Hello, Mochie, i've been reading your replies. I'm in the Sai Kung area and looking for part-time, legal, live-out help (this seems almost impossible)- does your friend the HK resident need work in the area? I'm an expat with 3 small kids. Thanks.

Hi! Lucey, I'll ask her tomorrow if she's willing to work for you. But could you please tell me the time, no. of hours per day and the no. of days in a week you'll be needing her service? She lives in Yuen Long and has to take care of her son, too. She's only available while her son is at school. But, if he's husband will be willing to send and fetch his son from school, she might be able to accept your offer. Do let me know. Good Luck.

Hi mochie99, I will be moving to Fo Tan perhaps next month and would like a legal part time maid too. If your friend is still available or if she knows anybody else, I will be happy to try her out.
