I suggest you visit the HK consulate website as there's a lot of useful information there concerning visas etc - including specific info re taking domestic helpers. Also there's a leaflet covering the issue available from the consulate in Wanchai.

Smooth Move - we won't be leaving until later in the year, and I have many friends in line.

Thanks all the same

Would you be prepared to pay the proper wages in Australia (considerably more than the comparative peanuts payable in HK)? Just one of the things that people overlook when they dream of retaining a servant when they return home.

TC - we pay our helper handsomly in HK and I would pay her a fair market rate back in OZ. We certainly don't look at it as bringing a 'slave' back - I personally find that horribly offensive. Its a case of not being able to secure child care places in Sydney or find a nanny that would love and care for our children as our helper does. She is part of our family and would be a joy to bring home.

That's very noble of you - well done. My comment certainly wasn't meant to cause offence (if such offence was taken), but it still remains a fact for many people who have lived a life overseas that they wouldn't normally have enjoyed at home and dream of what they might do when it comes time to return home. You will even see evidence of that if you trawl through this site for posts over the last 4 or 5 years.

I know, you see it all the time, especially those families with young children. Expat life and its luxuries become a trap, in that its just 'too hard' to move back home without the help... In our circumstance we both need to work back in OZ, and without childcare places secured(usually 18 mths waiting list, for which you need a letter of guaranted employment to apply for places - go figure....?)So for us,to be able to bring our helper with us would be a HUGE advantage.

Do you have children TC?

We tried to do take our DH to Oz when we left our last Asia posting. Nearly impossible. We spoke to immigration lawyers who said that they could do it but it was going to cost us 10-15K AUSD. My biggest concern was that there is really no social outlet for DHs on their day off. The businessmen rule only applies if you are one of the top 3 of a company generating $X (millions?). You can apply to sponsor somebody for academic reasons (ie more than 25 hours? per week study) which needs to renewed yearly upon passing but once again there is a huge capital outlay and I couldn't "force" her to study something. We decided that we, very sadly, had to say goodbye."

It was struggle (we were new to Sydney and had no family/friends there) but we managed.

I think when/if we go back then I will see if I can get an Aupair/student (Mandarin speaking so the kids can continue learning) to live in in exchange for some part-time home help/baby sitting.

Just need another year here until my youngest starts school and then it will not be such an issue for us!

Popsicle - some schools (if your children are old enough) have before and after school care. Might be worthwhile if you know where they are going (and if they have it) to put your name down now?.

popsicle,

Do we have children? Yes

Do we have a helper in HK? No

Do both of us work? No

Did both of us work before? Yes

Does that mean anything? No, that's just us & everyone's situation & needs are different. I'm just pointing out a fact of life. Good luck in seeking to meet your own needs. Over and out.

If a helper where to meet the criteria they can apply to do a course that suits them - and they are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week. My mum currently has a student who lives with her (she was thrown out of her aunties house - wonderful dramatic story). They must pass all their courses but at the end they are also able to apply for residency... it could be a way of helper your helper while she helps you out 20 hours a week? There are many suitable courses if she is not super interested in an academic qualification like those through TAFE and catering colleges who do all manner of hospitatlity courses or even caregiver or childcare. Then again maybe she would be interested in something professional. Otherwise I would suggest the www.greataupair.com site and get yourself a live in aupair to help out until you settle in and get childcare sorted out.

NLW2 and Ness - thanks for both your responses. I feel that the study visa, although suitable for many (know a family who has done this route) may not be an option for our helper.

Guess we will have to explore the nanny/ aupair route until child care places come up.
