Room too small??

One helper I know lives under the stairs! And it's a sliding door else she wouldn't be able to get in/out. In the circumstances, though, she has made the best of a bad situation. And this is with a well-off ex pat family in a largish house, and they opted for a separate bedroom for each of their 3 children (all between 6 and 10) instead of allocating even the smallest to their helper. Like JWM says, it's pretty common.

Few rooms have A/C, so in that sense it is actually good. And a separate bathroom is also a bonus, I have seen some where it is just in the corner of the room with a curtain.

Regarding storage, it is completely up to you if you use the area in the maids room or if you store elsewhere. You might want to just use the top shelves for things you don't use often.

Anyway, when you interview maids, you will show them the room - if they really don't like it, they won't take the job.

My maid's room is similar, the fridge is in there along with dehumdifier for drying clothes, and no a/c.

Her bathroom is a dunny in the kitchen with a shower above it so she can straddle the dunny whilst showering.

This set up is very common in HK and is all contained within the kitchen area so she would only need to come out to delivery the food and clean clothes, and clean when no one is home.

However, personally I believe it is inhumane so the dodgy shower/dunny does not ever get used by anyone, and fridge room room is only used for fridge, drying and storage.

Though, many do not get a room and sleep on a piece of ply over the bath, under the dining table once everyone else has gone to bed, on the children's floor and packs it up first thing in the morning.

The choice is yours, as long as you act within the law, but you would need to be reminded that your helper sleeps on a shelf above the golf clubs every time you collect the clubs to play.
