New Format for Helpers

ORIGINAL POST

Appreciate feedback on this new format that integrates the forum with the other helpers content (you may recall that the forum was on a different page altogether).

We are planning to integrate a few other sections as we move towards our new design launch in March - the property channel will be next - so any comments would be welcome as they may carry over to the work we do on Property.

Thanks in advance

I think it has a better feel, Ed.

It is an interesting format. However if i dare add, as one enters into a search for domestic helpers and goes into the "employer's reference" section for each helper to read reference, there is no way one can get back to the search (and the same page...we could do that earlier). It goes back to the main domestic helpers page which is frustrating, time consuming and too lengthy to deal with. As a result, people may not feel motivated going through the database of helpers...

A Tab that leads to the Domestic Helpers List (of available helpers). The only way to get there now is through the search?

A Tab to Gov't links on Domestic Helpers - and list a few links like:

Immigration FAQ

The PDF FDH Hiring Guide

Staturory Holidays

2007 Holiday List

etc...

A better search function for helpers would be great:

Nationality (ability to pick more than one)

Age range (ability to pick more than one)

Childcare Experience (ability to pick more than one)

Education

Cooking Experience (ability to pick more than one)

Years in HK (0, 1-2, 3-6, 6-10, 10+) (ability to pick more than one)

Employer Reference Required (Yes, No, Doesn't Matter)

Reason Contract Ended (Terminated, Other) (ability to pick more than one)

Date Posted (Past Day, Past Week, Longer)

Seach by name

Seach by keyword

Thanks. I will instruct The Creator as follows:

When clicking Employee Reference, lets launch a new browser window.

On the search there are two ways we can go with this:

1. We can keep the page as it is with the forum being the default content below the search.

2. Or we can default the content to entire list of the helpers as it was before.

My preference to keep it as it is - if users want to display ALL then all they have to do is select All in each of the 3 categories and hit submit and that will display every helper in the dbase.

Search Criteria: my opinion is that those search requests are far too specific and in some cases not necessary.

One other option I will consider is adding an Alerts system like we have on Property which will deliver all new helpers posted each day to your control panel/email so you dont have to search the site... Good idea?

Rather than sending it to the control panel - maybe just a NEW next to new posting each day? Then it is really easy to see for everyone.

Actually, I find I have to go back 3 -5 pages each day and wish I could do a more comprehensive search - you have so many helpers, a good search would make it much more user friendly.

For example I only want:

Age Range - 35-45

Childcare experience - All

Education - university

Cooking Experience - Chinese Western

Years in HK - 6-10 and 10+

Employer Reference - yes

REason Contract Ended - Other (no terminations!)

Date Posted - Past Day/Week

And sometimes you find someone named 'emily' but then you can't find her post again - so searching for her name would be great.

For Employer Reference - you just need a 'back to previous page' button - not a new window... the last thing many of us want is yet another window open.

I think for users unfamiliar with teh site they will never figure out how to seach for helpers is the defualt is not the content list of helpers. Having a TAB that says SEARCH FOR HELPER and have this tab default to the list of helpers is very user friendly and easy to understand for a new user.

I absolutely agree with all of crj points - a more detailed search function is necessary, and also that a 'New' posting next to each name that is new that day would be much better than an alert. We already know that there are loads of new helpers posted every day, no need to tell us that, especially if you haven't narrowed down the search criteria. If the criteria could be narrowed down far enough, an alert might be a good idea, otherwise I wouldn't be interested. Everyone has their own specific requirements as to what they are looking for. Also a default 'search for helper' tab which searches 'all' then allows you to narrow down would be more intuitive.

Will discuss some of these ideas with our programmer. There is a happy medium on search functions so we will see if we can implement what we think are some of the better ones.

I think Age Range, Employer Reference, Search Only Those without Terminations and Uni Eduction would be the key ones...

As for New - the ads display in order of submission to the site so perhaps a more prominent Date Posted presentation would be best

Thanks Ed

I was just thinking 'NEW' might attract the eye a bit more... I always do look at the date anyway. I would not call that an essential feature, just a nice to have.

Will consider that

Cooking skills is pretty important - ie whether a helper can cook Western food or not. Why do you consider Uni Education to be key?

I will review all with our programmer tonight and we will consider all requests. Again there is a happy medium that needs to be acheived - we cannot put a search for every possible scenario...

Fairly big job to roll all this in - we'll get to it when time permits
