helpers have spoilt our name

hi all

we have had 2 helpers over the past year all indians, and the first did not work out for us so we have had to terminate however the second had to leave because of her own personal problems.

we have now been looking out now for a Filipino DH as well as indians .

we interviewed one indian recently and she was liked by both me and my wife however after a few days she phoned my and told us that the maids in the locality were saying that we are bad employers and do not give the DH any food etc.

I was completely floored after i heard this and my wife is very upset as we have been going out of our way to help our helpers and the helpers eat whatever we eat no question about that.

after asking around and proabingwe have found out that it was the dh that recently broke contract with us who has spread this rumour, however there are 2 indian maids in the locality that are carrying on this rumour which is not true and spoiling our chances of getting a goos DH.

the helper broke contract with us because she was having problems back home and her husband had suffered a nervous break down, and we were kind enough to let her go after she had only completed 6 months of her contract immeditely without any notice etc.


how do we end this is there any way we can stop this other than moving, is there any legal action we can take as we have people willing to stand witness against these 2 maids in the locality.

The same happened with us. Any potential DH we were interviewing were being stopped & 'advised' by the other DH's in the neighbourhood. I do not even know who the DH's are.

When we found someone we liked, I told her in advance what she was likely to hear about me. I told her exactly what happened in our home with the past DH. I told her to be sure she wanted to work for us and if she prefered to believe the other DH down, then I dont even want her.

She accepted the job. The DH's down still talk & tell her that she wont last with us. We have had teething problems with her ( like we all do) but I reckon she will stay. I sure hope so.

There is nothing you can do about the gossips down. Most DH I have learnt will gossip, dont let it get to you.

No you are not the only one.


I was upfront about it to our helper and told her exactly what had happened in the past. Also drilled it into that:


- she should be open with us and feel that she can talk to us about any issues

- we are her employers, not the other domestic helpers

- she just needs to focus on her job

thanks annieh for your input, have tried you approach and it works our potential was told about the rumours and also told that she had the choice to believe the rumours and leave or believe our version and sign with us, she has signed with us.
