We may shortly be moving to Hong Kong. I would like to know if it is easy to find a part time domestic helper ie someone who came a few mornings per week, for example. (I have been under the impression that most are full time.)Also, would it be possible to hire someone just for 3 months or so, or do their contracts tend to be longer? What is the cost on average per week?
One further question.....are reliable evening babysitters easy to come by?

The confusion may exist because most helpers here in HK are from abroad - Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka being the main countries of origin. For such helpers there is only one legal option: full-time, live-in and a 2-year contract. Other than that you can hire locals (meaning anyone with HK permanent residency, so it could include someone who was born outside HK but has attained PR status) on a part-time, live-out basis with a short-term contract. Also there are agencies (like those advertised on this site) for non-long-term help. If you advertise for part-time help you will be inundated with offers, but be aware that most of them will not be legal. It will be your responsibility to verify, and the penalty is considerable if you get caught. Many do it but in my view it's simply not worth the risk. Good luck.
