not renewing her contract

I'm not sure I'll renew my helper's contract.

Meanwhile, I would like to know a few things :

- when do I have to let her know whether I'll renew it or not ?

- if I don't, I'm a bit scared that her last days/weeks with us will be unpleasant. So what can I do to make sure it'll go smooth ?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

You have two options:

1 give her one month notice and ask her to work out the month.

2. giver her one month salary instead of notice

I am going through this process at the moment with my current maid.

I've checked with labour dept and was told both parties are not required to give notice if approaching end of contract. However, we discussed her visa status at the beginning of the year and she broke the news that she didn't want to renew her contract with us to our relief.

My maid is in her final month and lucky for us she has tendered her resignation so in effect she has to compensate us for the remainder of the contract (payment in lieu of notice). If you decide to terminate her while she's serving her final month then you have to compensate her for the remainder of the contract (wages in lieu of notice).
