domestic helper sick days

my helper has taken to her bed for the last few days with a heavy cold. how does sickness pay work in hong kong for amahs? can anyone enlighten me?

Q5.3 Under what circumstances is a helper entitled to sickness allowance?


Answer

* An employer should pay the helper sickness allowance if :

- he/she has accumulated the number of paid sickness days;

- the sick leave taken is not less than four consecutive days; and

- the sick leave is supported by an appropriate medical certificate.

* Paid sickness days are accumulated at the rate of two paid sickness days for each completed month of service during the first 12 months of employment; and four paid sickness days for each month of service thereafter subject to a maximum of 120 days.


Q5.4 What is the rate of sickness allowance? When should it be paid?


Answer

The rate of sickness allowance is equal to four-fifths of the normal wages. It should be paid not later than the normal pay day.

I makes sense to pay sick leave even if it's just for one day otherwise you may find that she will take four days off knowing she won't get paid if she doesn't. Everyone gets sick so go with what you would want your employer to do and you can't go wrong.

thanks guys. i took her to the docs this am and she has some antibios. now. it's that horrid fluey thing. i feel sympathy for her- of course - it's horrible having the flu . anyway- i've made her a nice dinner of veggies and organic chicken and lots and lots of water. i'm hoping she feels a bit better tomorrow...


need to go back to work myself! (all about me harhar...)
