Our helper arrived only 2 weeks ago and now tells us she is pregnant. She is over 35, her first pregnancy and she is already unwell from the pregnancy. What recourse do we have? Our insurance does not cover pregnancy, so that is an issue, but I am much more concerned that continuing in her position could hurt her health or the baby's. Anyone have advice for this? We do not know this person at all, but do not want something bad to happen to her.

Didn"t she had a pregnancy test done before you employ her?Usually is compulsory to have a medical check up before get the visa for HK.
Maibe you should speak with her if she can handle the job ,and the health risks she might have.
In my opinion she wasn't honest of her not to tell you earier

Did you hire her from the agency? If yes then return to the agency and ask them for exchange another maid. If not then you need to talk with your helper since she is not honest to you on her medical reported.

You don't have to pay for her maternity because when time comes she won't be with you for 40 weeks.

I am not sure but the rules give the employer a time frame of 3 months after 3 months the employer is liable in the first 3 months if she is pregnant she can be terminated. i am quite sure of this rule but you might want to check it first.
she has probaly lied to you about her condition
all the best

Your helper can go to a public hospital for the delivery. You don't need to worry about the lack of insurance coverage. As to whether your helper "lied" as some here say, I don't know the facts. You can terminate a helper for just about any reason. As she was already pregnant when she was hired, you do not have to pay for her maternity leave. If you want to know whether you can terminate a helper because she is pregnant, you are best off calling the Immigration Department.

You can't terminate her because she is pregnant. That would be illegal and unethical. You could perhaps offer her some sort of extra pay if she should decide to resign early, but you'd want to be careful.

Thanks for the great advice. Probably I am really stupid, but after a long talk with her, I can't send her back home where she has nothing. I believe her to be very desperate, and if I was an expectant mother, I suppose I would be too. So she is staying. I hope this is an uncomplicated pregnancy with a bouncing, healthy baby arriving this fall.

Good for you! She needs help and she needs a job. Be firm and straight with her. Tell her that you will support her if she lives up to her end of the bargain.
You get what you give Mattie---We all need one another :)
