Intersting question.
I have had two helpers before and neither have asked me this.
Our current helper asked me what was included in the food allowance. I don't think she is taking advantage, we were just clarifying the 'household guidelines' and she asked this.
I said we will provide:
cooking oils, spices, salt, pepper, etc...
pots, pans, rice cooker, etc...
That she has to buy what she eats:
rice, noodles, fish, meat, vegetables, fruit
She then asked me if toiletries were provided by me, I said:
Toilet Paper - employer
cleaning materials - employer
shampoo/conditioner/soap, etc.. - domestic helper
Just curious what you all do?

From your list above it would appear you are not actually providing her with a food allowance but merely the cooking utensils and condiments. I would hope that staples, i.e. rice, noodles, plus daily proteins and fruit and vegetables, are automatically included.

Actually I read it as the maid clarifying what she has to buy out of the food allowance vs what she can use of what is already in the house. Good on her for clarifying it.
crj, we do as you have outlined above.

Thames - sorry for not being clearer.
The food allowance is a monetary amount, that the helper will use for purchasing her own food. We are not buying her food nor are we forcing her to eat our food.
Sandpiper - you are correct, thanks for confirming that you do the same.

I have told my helper that she can eat and use any food in the house. But if she wants to buy certain type of food that I don't have, she would use her own money. Although I always take into account where she comes from and would include some of the food she likes to eat in my weekly grocery shopping.
As for toiletries, any personal items such as sampoo and soap, she will buy herself. Other than that, she uses whatever we have.
