Our helper is really good and is transferring from Singapore to Hong Kong with us. However, we have no idea how much she should earn in HK.
Just wondering if someone could give me some ideas about how much a helper could expect to earn in HK with 11 years experience?

Sorry but I thought $3,400 was a starting salary - for a brand new helper.
And there is no need for a probation period as our helper is transferring with us from Singapore.
The reason for my question is that I do not want our helper to earn the same as a brand new helper. If we make that mistake then she might consider transfering to another family who are willing to pay for her experience.

Then it's up to you what to pay as soon as it's more than the minimum.
For example, my generous friend (2 kids, both parents work) pays the following:
-HK$6,000 salary
-500 food allowance
-one salary yearly bonus
-CNY, X'mas and birthday bonuses (say, 1,000 each)
-air ticket to home country 1-2 times a year
-LCD TV and DVD
-other perks.
I doubt, though, that if you give her the minimum she'll be looking for another employer. Besides, not everbody is willing to employ an experienced DH. Personally, I had one who had 8 years experience that differed from what I expected.
You may start with the minimum and increase the salary with time. That's what majority of people do here.
Anyway, just do what you think is appropriate, since you trust her and know her for a long time.

Thanks for the info, in actual fact it is good to know what generous is.. now we can find somewhere between the minimum and generous. I just want to make sure I am comfortable with what we pay our helper because I would feel terrible if what we paid her didnt reflect what she adds to our family.

What are you paying her now in Singapore converted into HK Dollars? I would recommend that if you are happy with her that you pay more than the minimum, as there are plenty of helpers who are getting higher salaries in HK and she may well become dissatisfied.
Experience in every job provides higher salaries and perks this is no different and as you said you want to show your appreciation for the contribution your helper makes to your family and home life but in context to what you can afford.

thanks moppet but converting from sing dollars doesnt help because it is a different system there. the conversion works out at about HK$2100 because the government levy there is higher than here. i know our helper is happy to be earning more here than in singapore but she will eventually work out she could earn more elsewhere.
anyway, it is great info. we dont want to lose our helper!

Does your helper earn the minimum in Singapore sydneymum or is it a little higher?
I only ask because I would imagine doing the same based on what the minimum is in HK plus levy etc would also keep her happy especially if it turns out to be more money than before.
She will also hear the horror stories about dreadful employers once she's here just the same as we hear about the terrible Helpers so I wouldn't worry too much about her looking else where for a job. If you get along and everyone seems happy i think it will stay that way.

We pay:
3400 (minumum by law)
300 food allowance (for her to buy own food)
and will increase to 4000 total.
We will not pay over 4000, as we did this before an in hindsight it was a mistake.
But there are bonuses throughout the year - family visits and leaves 'tips' or 500, Christmas is another 500 as is Birthday.

sydneymum, when i was interviewing i was surprised at how many employers were paying the minimum so it is not at all unusual.
note that it is not as easy for helpers to change jobs as in singapore. if the two year contract is terminated early they have to leave hong kong and wait paperwork processing for the new visa (assuming they have a job lined up). I understand this can take months, especially if your helper has to stay in Phil. for the new training requirements.
if you are not doing so already, it would be best to check out the visa requirements to have your helper go to hong kong early so hopefully you can get (at least some of ) the waiting / processing time done while you are still in singapore.

We pay :
4600 base salary
500 food allowance
We give $500 at CNY and about $3000 at Christmas. We supply the basics like rice, soap and toothpaste.
Most of our friends pay around $4000 - $5000 and I must say we all have fabulous helpers.
