hi all;

my DH threw away some of my potted plants - 1 large and 6 small. when i asked her why, she said they were dead. they might have been a little sickly, but they were not dead. and i would have expected her to ask before throwing them away. what do you think?

we gave her notice this past weekend. she is not upset - she seems like nothing happened. i have suspected that she wanted to be fired - is this possible?

yours, elana

If she wants to be fired, then fire her and give her payment in lieu of notice. Personally, I would never let a terminated helper stay in my home for a notice period (thankfully, this hasn't happened yet).

On the other hand, your helper may just be depressed that you have terminated her and realises that she will have to go home shortly and lose the income that she (or her family) depended on.

As for the plant, yeah she should have asked you first, but there is no point in getting upset now that she is on her way out.

hi all, this is elana. i want to know about the plant because i want to get a sens of what is "normal" here. myself, i would never do this at a friend's, but maybe a DH views it as her job somehow, tho she knew i was trying to make them grow.

please tell me, tsuiwah, why you would not let a DH stay during the resignation period? what should i be on the alert for? i have some reaon to think she has occasionally taken things like soap and tinned foods.

she really does not seem upset. i have to think she kind of wanted to leave the job, without wanting to say so. i think she wants to go to canada.

thanks everyone, elana

hi saikunga, i don't think she has been accepted, but she has asked me about it, and she has a cousin there, so she is interested. elana

Why would an employer consider paying the one month's notice and asking the terminated helper to leave immediately? For the same reason as people in the IT industry (for example) are also often not given the option of working out the notice period. Because the risks to the employer can often be high. During that period the disgruntled (at being fired) employee could exact revenge on the employer. And if the place of employment also happens to be the employer's home then it may be considered that's a bit too much of a risk to take.
