I have a DH who used my mother-on-law's mobile to call Korea and Indonesia when my mother-in-law was on holiday. We went out on both the days that she used her mobile and we only found out when the mobile bill came. I asked her whether or not she had used it and she said no. When I showed her the bill and the call record on my mother-in-law's mobile, she admitted it after I asked about 10 times. I have given her a chance but if she had admitted it in the first place I would have forgiven her but since she was dishonest, I cannot trust her anymore. Anyway, I have given her a chance but if it happens again or she does something else dishonestly, is it a good enough reason to terminate her instantly and not have to give her wages in lieu.

I think this is pretty serious. She knew it was not her phone and that it was a mobile that would attract high bills. It was not a mistake or misunderstanding made in error.

Thats very bad and is effectively stealing and she has been dishonest about it all. i would deduct the monies out of her salary and if you want to keep her, just remind her that this should be her final warning and that stealing nor lying is tolerated in your house.

Back on this again. Discovered that my watch and 3 rings are missing - I assume that the maid has stolen it. If I ask the maid to search her bags and find my belongings there, I will terminated her instantly. Is it also best that I call in the police or ask the agent to deal with this situation. Would appreciate advice from anyone who has experience this before.

That is terible, sorry to hear that. I would call the agency and ask what they recommend. Otherwise, I agree call the police and let them deal with it and her.

Thanks, I have called the agency and they said I can either call the police and go through the stress of giving statement and possibly attend court. Or let the agent with with it - which I will go for as I am due to go to UK for a couple of weeks in June and hence if a court case came up I will not be able to attend. The agent said that I do not have to owe the maid anything except for the travel fare and HKD100 travelling and food allowance and make sure that the maid sign the termination letter of this agreement. I will deliver the maid directly to the agency and thankfully they have her passport hence she cannot leave the country illegally.
Just very disheartened as I have to go through the stage of finding another maid again.

Hi bbvv,
It is really heart breaking to hear that kind of story for there are many reliable domestic helpers in queue looking for employer in HK, I really felt sorry for your DH because didn't take her job seriously, she's lying or even stealing expensive things not because of her family's financial crisis (she didn't even mention to you to borrow money to send to her families back to her home country) but rather for her own lavishness.
Hope you'll find a better helper again. Wish you luck!

you might need the police report for insurance, if you have home contents and it covers your watch an jewellery.

very sorry to hear what happened.
just make sure that you search her bags personally on the day she leaves your house. you might even find things you have not found missing yet.

My suitcases are in her room (we have an open agreement that some of our stuff are stored in her room and that doors are locked when going to sleep) and I was checking to see if she was cleaning the areas I asked her to and she didn't and just so happened to noticed my watch on the upper bunk bed inbetween 2 suitcases. I have always left my watch downstairs in a tray with other bits and bobs but have not worn it for a few months hence did not notice it being missing until yesterday. Agency suggested that we get the maid to search her bags so that we do not touch her belongings and video it at the same time for evidence so that she cannot say that she did not steal it. If she disagree, we can then report it to the police with evidence.

i am very very sorry that all this is happening, happy that it looks like you will be getting your jewellery back, especially if it has sentimental value, and hope you will have better luck with your next helper, and this one leaves quickly with no more drama and unpleasantness.

Yes, definitely have sentimental value as I brought it with my first bonus money 10 years ago - it was expensive at the time for me as I travelled back from UK.
Thanks for all your kind words and advice. Now have to face this horrible scene when I return home from work tonight.

Well, terminated the domestic helper as there were evidence that she did steal and she admitted it in the end despite not at the beginning - we have videod the evidence incase she turns against us. Still missing a diamond ring which nothing can be done about - my first ring from my husband. This morning before I took her out to the agency, she almost managed to sneak out my mother-in-law's emerald diamond ring and 2 gold bangles. She was in her nightie and I said I will be in the same room as her when she changes her clothing and she instantly said she was dying to go to the loo as she had a stomachache. This made me more aware and I let her go to the loo and waited outside. When she had finished she changed and nothing was found on her. She then said that she wanted to go to the toilet again to pick up her shampoo so I went with her - at that point it prompt me to check the toilet again as I did yesterday and I managed to find those jewelry slipped inbetween some magazines. She admitted to taking those as well and I got her to sign the termination letter for theft.
Just heard from the agency that the maid said that she has not received any cash from me - I gave her the 6 working days I owed her plus HKD100 for food and travel allowance - I have a copy of the receipt signed by her and she has one too so no getting out of that one.
I advise you all to be careful - I went through a bad experience and certainly will be more alert next time round but hope I settle with a good domestic helper as I know from friends that there are lots of trustworthy maids out there.
