I expect that, in most cases, the helpers do know. They just don't want to create any negative reputations for themselves in their community. I'd do the same myself if i was fired for, say dishonesty or failure to take proper care of the baby. Giving the real reason to their community will make "the mud stick" whether it is true or false. Saying they don't know creates a mystery for everyone else (but not necessarily themselves.)
Also, if they truly don't know, well that's the reason there - poor communication on the part of the employer or poor comprehension on the part of the employee.
In the professional world I believe the equivalent phrase is "resigned for personal reasons"!

mborderform is right, most of the time they do know but would rather not go into details so that people won't say "well, she deserved it".
My previous helper had the gall to call a friend's helper she only met once to say that I fired her that day and she didn't know why. I was told that she was crying during the call. Odd, when I fired her I was very explicit of my reasons and she definitely was not crying during our talk nor even after she came back for her clothes later in the day (I presumed that was when she called this DH).

I've always been extremely worried about the implications of hiring someone to live in your house, but our helper is the most trustworthy, reliable, logical grown-up, as well as being generally smart, positve and great fun with our 8-month old. She's been here for 24 years and her English is excellent.
