allowances

Hi. I have an acquaintance with an interesting question. She recently hired a helper. Say theoretically (since live out is dodgy), they agreed to HK$1200 allowance for board, but the helper ends up living in a place that charges only HK$900. Should the friend still pay the helper HK$1200 or just HK$900? The allowance was never clarified when the contract was signed... Thanks for your input.

Since this was not clarified earlier, helper could be expecting HK1200. For HK300, I don't think it's worthwhile to "backout". Helper will also perceive employer negatively.

I'll just leave it at HK1200 so that she can have the little extra cash for daily fares, misc spending due to living out.

I think if the helper found a "cheaper" place to stay than originally budgeted, that's HER $ 300 earned per month then. She shouldn't be penalized for finding a better bargain!

Thanks for your replies. Following on from this, does anyone know if it's unusual for a live out DH to want a private room, rather than a bedspace? In the example above, the DH wants a private room, which seems to costs $1800 in the area the friend lives, which is $600 higher than the agreed budget. The DH has agreed to a bedspace for now, but friend is worried that the DH may become unhappy later on if she doesn't eventually get a private room.

The helper may have found something cheaper once she took into account the need to pay for transport. Perhaps she is using the 300 to cover bus fares etc.

The helper has been asked the helper to move within walking distance of her employer so there are no transportation costs to get to the job. And from what I understand, it would be the employer that pays the transport fees, not the helper...

I think it is very reasonable to expect a room for herself. I imagine she is not living in because the employer does not wish this and most DH's do get a room to themsleves so it's only fair that she should if living out.
