Driving - advice please

ORIGINAL POST

We have just recently spent a fortune on putting our helper through driving lessons and after 2 attempts with the HKSM she has passed. However we have taken her out for practice since and she is no where near ready to drive alone nevermind with the kids.

My question is...

Are we expecting too much of her to drive? Should we complain to the HKSM for passing her when she is clearly not ready to drive?

Should we look for another helper as we are soon to move to a remote village with no bus access? Is it likely we would find a femaile DH with driving experience? We are really stuck with what to do.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

just wondered how you got permission to let her drive as we would liek to do this - but her visa specifically says they are not allowed to. Is there a process we shoudl follow. On the actual drinving thing- sadly drving schools tend to teach you how to pass, only practice will improve her.

Hi, i also learned driving at the HKSM. Passed on my second take as well, learned automatic. The lessons give you the basics of road rules, how to park, etc. but you need practice before you can really just drive. After taking the lessons, hubby sat in the car with me and we drove to places like Stanley, Aberdeen, etc. and he would constantly tell me if i was doing things right, when to cut, what to look out for, etc. Am still not too confident and take routes that i know by heart or i don't drive. There are so many things in day-to-day driving that never came up while i was at the school - like i cheat on the hills of HK and use both feet so i don't roll back but the school never taught me that. So if you've already invested time and money in her driving lessons, you just need to make her drive you around and guide her and then she'll get better at it.

Thanks.

Your helper can drive legally by obtaining permission from the immigration dept to drive, only for the purpose of taking the kids to school and shopping etc. It is a simple form you fill out once they have passed their HK test. They are not allowed to drive you to work or pick you up from the airport etc.FYI the lessons and test are very expensive and beware.... it doesnt guarantee they will be safe to drive and you may have to invest lots of practice time on saturdays and sundays.

to drive in hk you must be aggressive. when i got my license it was scary at first that is why i bought a very cheap car 8k and took it out as much as i could to practice, best time to drive around is at night when not much traffic. try to get your helper to remember the route first so that they when they drive during the day it will be one less thing to worry about trying to find the palce.
