Hello !
I am in the process of hiring a DH and this site has beena life saver.
I would like my DH and I to be clear from day one on her vacation days.
I have the list of Statutory Holidays but how do I pick her vacation time to go to the Philippines ?
Do I pick or does she ?
I want to be fair,
How is it usually done ?

Yes, my boss tells me when I can take holidays. Yes, my hubby's boss tells him when he can take holidays.
There are lots of employees who have no say when they can take holidays: teachers, factory workers, police, firefighters, etc etc etc.
I'm a working Mom with no extended family in Hong Kong. How can I let my DH have holidays when she wants? She can only go when I or my husband have our holidays.

Thank you for the response..
So do I have to pay them for the time they are gone ?
also do I have to pay for the air fare ?

Yes you have to pay them for the two weeks entitlement no you don't need to pay there airfare

I think it's only stipulated that you pay only for their return airfare at the end of the contract. If she chooses for you to purchase her ticket when she is on vacation then make sure you make her sign a notice saying that she understands that you are paying for that flight in lieu of the end of contract return ticket. But really, I think it's just safer for employers to pay that end of the contract flight.

I apologize, I didn't make my questions clear..
What I meant was if we agree on extra vacation time,do I have to pay her for the time off and the air fare for extra vacation time ?

I think mare red that most of us accept that 2 weeks holiday in two years is too little for anyone so therefore we are happy to give some extra time off with pay. I am very happy to do this, as I know how hard my helper works and how important it is for her to have a break from us and see her family. I guess everyone is different and so are the circumstances.

The two weeks is the "annual leave" included in the 2 year contract with your helper. The new rule is 1 week per year. Some helpers' (depending on different situation) some helpers gets a chop for their visa for less than 2 years..... and so they are expected to exit HK. Some helpers go home in the first year of their contract, and then if they renew with the employer, they don't have to go home at the end of the 2 year contract.
Ultimately, 2 weeks is what is PAID holiday earned by the helper at the end of the 2 year contract. And you as the employer has to PAY for the ticket back HOME. (That's ONE way).
Holidays OTHER than the 2 weeks during a 2 year contract is considered UNPAID. However, many generous employers will offer to PAY the air ticket for the helper to go home. We pay our helpers to go home once a year to see their young children. We pay for their air ticket, and the extra days they take off are UNpaid.
