We are considering a move to the UK and would like to bring our DH with us. Has anyone had experience with this or know of anyone who has? Is this even possible with UK immigration?

If you do a search on this forum under 'UK' you'll see earlier posts about taking DHs to the UK. Hopefully you'll find the info you're looking for.

You would have to pay minimum wage for the UK and by the hour not month as in HK so it could turn out to be very expensive. There are many options in the uk for live in and out help if you can afford to pay someone.

there is also the risk of your helper going AWOL. there's been many a tale where the helper has just 'vanished' even when on holiday with the employer. the helpers do this because they know they can work illegally in the UK for a lot more money than here in HK. it doesn't matter if they don't have their passports or visas 'cos once you're in it's easy to bypass id checks since no one actually has to have an Id card in uk. and then, when they helper decides he/she has had enough, they just go into a police station and ask to be sent home!

i warn you, it does happen!!

Mine ran off last summer, on her 2nd visit with me. She was a v smart and excellent helper, and thought we got on so well, etc etc. One day after a trip to Legoland, she was gone! Their idea of loyalty is not the sames as ours. The pay on the black market is around dble that of Hong Kong, but having said that, living and travel cost a lot more.

Good luck!

MG8320,

I am not sure what the mechanics are, but what I know is that once we, helpers are in the UK we are allowed to change employment IF we could find a sponsor.

In the case of my employer's friend, what I know is that they found it more complicated to apply a work visa from here so what they did is ask their sister to sponsor her when they went to London and she continued working for them. Of course, they were fair and paid her the local rate she is still with them , and it's been like 12 years now.

Side comments:

1. I have been to UK with my employer for many years but never thought of running away BECAUSE she is one of the best ( if not the greatest) person to work for and that she respected us, her helpers, as a person and allow us to grow. I have been offered an 8 hours/5 days work in London for twice the minimum pay ( min is 240-280 quid/week + transport and boarding if live out-- Chelsea and Kensington area... lesser somewhere else ) but I declined. Because some maids do have HONOR and knows LOYALTY.

2. a girl ( plus a workmate) I interviewed for our magazine run away from their employers while they were in a queue to buy tickets for Paris in Waterloo station because they were verbally, physically and emotionally abused. They were never addressed by their names but maid 1, 2 etc or " you, animal" at times.

moral of this posts? Just because some run away, does not mean that everyone else will do and in some cases that/when they did, in most cases it was not out of greed or out of whims.

I would hate to think that this helper who looks like has chance to work somewhere better than HK ( pay , benefits wise) will lose her chance simply because of what was implied/experiences by other posters. Let's try to use different brush for different person, please.
