Tips on cleaning?

I'd really appreciate some tips on how your homes are cleaned!

I'd like to establish a better cleaning routine for my pt DH (& myself)...but could sure use some advice.

Like for example, what types of cleaning products do you find work best for say floors, wood, glass, mirrors, metal appliances, toilets, tubs, babies room etc..?

Also, what types of cleaning tools work best for the various jobs? (papertowels, brushes, rags, mop etc.)

My dh seems to be adament that she vacuum first, but I think it makes more sense to do the dusting first & do the vacuuming & mopping last...I'm I wrong in thinking that?

She also has a habit of using my kitchen dish towels to clean with (even using dirty ones from the laundry bin to wipe my kitchen counter! yuck...that's another story).

But, my dish towels do actually seem to clean glass tops better than some of the professional cleaning rags I've bought.

thks for any tips!

Have you trying asking her to do it how you would do it? I have a preferred way of doing things, and I'm sure you must too.

BTW, helpers seem to like to use those white tea-towel type of cloths from Wellcome (blue edging with 'Good Morning' in red on them) rather than chore-specific cloths. Type in 384511 into Search on the Wellcome site to see what they look like. Perhaps a pile of these will stop her from feeling she needs use the tea towels.

Well, thats why it would be nice to hear tips from others, and how they like their homes cleaned.

That way I can learn the best way to clean various areas/items in my home and then show her.

My style of cleaning is papertowels & 409/windex! haha

Claire, if you wanna throw me some tips on your prefered way It'd be much appreciated!

I use a combination of lemon juice, JIF/CIF, lysol & clorox products(if possible multi-purpose) & color coded cheap towels for different purposes ( eg. kitchen, bathrooms).

1. General furniture dusting, then vacuum.- daily

2. Wipe tables, chairs, doors with damp cloth, no detergent used - 2x per wk.

3. Mop hall, stairs, rooms' flooring with squeezee type of mop and lysol - daily

4. Wipe table glass top with a bit of dishwasher detergent after a meal and final wipe with lemon juice - daily

5. Clean & rinse windows with dishwasher detergent, dry and final wipe with newspaper- biweekly for upstairs/downstairs.

6. Take out screen netting and rinse off dust. Leave to dry. - biweekly

7. Wipe with damp cloth, no detergent for indoors painted walls - 1x per mth by p/timer

8. Scrub bathrooms wall tiles with JIF/CIF or clorox. Use clorox for toilet bowls - alternate days. We rinse the tiles/shower door after shower to remove suds, which makes cleaning easier.

9. Brush with kitchen cleaner & wipe down wet kitchen area- after cooking.

10. Wipe dry kitchen cabinet(inside/out) wih damp cloth - 1x per mth

Frequency of cleaning varies for each household. My place is pretty dusty.

Thanks

Newspapers for cleaning glass...really? Why?

When my glass dining table top arrived, the delivery men wiped mine down with newspaper (which I'd never seen done before) and it left a strange greasy residue on the glass which was hard to get off.

Lemon juice on your glass top huh? I guess that makes it squeeky clean and smell good!...good tip

Select only the black ink sections, wet the newspaper and wipe in 1 direction.

Observed this being done by the boutiques & they have big panels glass windows.

Read that n/paper ink will act as a mild polisher and also will leave behind no lint after cleaning. Microfiber cloth is another option.

The 12" portable Moulinex vacuum cleaner is handy for minor chores. Just need to charge every couple of days.
