i asked our helper whose contract is up in dec if she is going to re-sign or not. she gv me this whole story abt how she is v happy here and we treat her v well BUT she still said she needs to THINK abt it. so i asked her if it was anything i shud know...and then she said 'well yes ma'am my sunday holiday i want more hrs' so i said what kind of hrs. she said she feels her sunday is not enough. mind u she leaves by 8.30 and back by 9.30. so i told her to tell me where she thinks i can add more hrs. i told her she can go by 6 if she wants to but she didnt cos no one is out at that time. but i said monday being school day we are all in bed by 10.30 and i didnt want anyone coming home after we were all in bed!! so i wont extend any later. so anyways she said gv me one week to think abt it. my question if she happy what is there to think abt and second what diff is one week going to make??? is she just playing me out to see how far i will bend? any insight????

as i understand the law, your helper is legally entitled to a 24 hour rest period.
possibly because she is leaving the house at 8.30am (her choice) and then returning 11 hours later, she is feeling she is not being granted her day off?
i don't know if she is playing you to see how far you will bend, maybe she enjoys being with her friends and relaxing, and wants to have that one day without deadlines.
you might want to offer her a compromise, if you feel very strongly about the 9.30pm on a sunday deadline, offer her saturday nights off at 9.30 until sunday at 9.30pm, which would be legal. while its true many of her friends would be working on a saturday evening, she might have some she could visit.
sounds like you have a good relationship with your helper and that she wants to stay with you. this issue can likely be worked out if you both give a little.
good luck.
