Wow, the economy is good and trying to find a good DH is not easy!
Last week, I called approx 10 helpers and arranged to meet them and only 3 bothered to show up for the interview. They were break contract/terminated helpers. All the other finished contract helpers didn't even bother to turn up.
Turn it around, if employers were like that to DH's, would we be slated for being rude and heartless?

Lets put this into context. It's approximately the same percentage of people who bother to turn up for interviews in companies, and these are for $50,000+ jobs not DH jobs. So lets not pick on DH, because the people we employ are a good mix of local and expats!

Many senior in companies don't even agree to go on an interview unless they really think they would love the job. Their time is too valuable

Not agreeing to go to an interview and not turning up for an interview are slightly different. It's just common courtesy to let the person know that the pre-arranged time is not possible - no more questions asked from the potential employer's side.
In times where you have a toddler and no helper, it's not exactly fair to take your child out with you every hour for interviews, only to be left standing at the meeting place like an idiot!
I'm not picking on DH's, Evildeed. This is a forum for employers and DH to share their views on the DH situation here in HK/Asia. I just wanted to express that it's a lack of courtesy not to turn up. A phone interview was held prior to arranging a face-to-face meeting, so if the DH is not interested in the size of my apartment, my accent/nationality, the number of people in my household, then don't agree to meet. Simple as that!

I agree PE, but as mentioned (and you do not seem to like my tone) it's about the same for a company, although (and we are hiring hugely at the moment) the expenses and hassles are even worse.
When I interview someone we usually give them a quick phone interview and then invite them in. Now this is no small task as I have to make sure my team is in the office, back from China, etc to do this. And then no-one turns up! So that is a huge waste of resources, time, costs, etc. So yes I also share your adage, if someone doesn't want to come then of course tell us so I don't have everything turned upside down for the sake of one person. Now if I could change the laws to sue them for that time then yes I would!

Cara, don't want to work for "evil" she's always very quick to attack ppl. Ask for advice and you get a useless mean reply. As for Polite employer, it's a good thing that these unreliable ones didn't turn up for the interview. Imagine, having them to work for you and lying to you all the time. I understand that finding someone honest and nice to work in your home is very difficult indeed (afterall we are NOT talking about an "office").

Cara, these are for manufacturing specialists and associated fields.
And mimisam, you obviously haven't read many of my posts at all across these boards! I like to inject realism, or offer advice. I've been in HK a long while (although nowhere near as log as Cara), I've been through a lot of crap in life and I've come out the other end and now have a great life. A lot of what is asked I reply honestly to. Some people don't like that because they want to hear that everything will be plain sailing. That's life!
Oh and by the way I am a he, not a she. Which you would of known had you read other posts across these boards and not just the DH section.

Evildeeds, Advice is something that should help/comfort, you've been through a lot of crap in life but doesn't mean you have to give out alot too! NO, I don't notice you on other post as I am not one of your fans.

Ah so your judgement is based on a couple of posts. Understood now. Enough said really!
Now if we look at the op's original statement which said that out of 10 interviews only 3 people showed up. Then she made a comparison to "what if" employers did the same. I made the comparison to the same % of interviewees coming to interviews per se. So what i wrong with that? That is realistic and if you follow is sound advice whether you are hiring for a company or as a DH. At the end of the day you are an employer.
