Advice on hiring helper for old lady

After reading all the horror stories about FDHs on this forum, I'm really apprehensive about hiring one to look after my elderly mother, who's moving to HK.

Anyone got any tips on hiring for the elderly (mid-70s) ? apart from requiring patience & previous experience with elderly. Mum's mobile and fluent in English/Cantonese but frail and needs help bathing.

She'll be left alone with the helper all day and some evenings. She's very trusting as she has a loyal helper of 12 years in Malaysia (who unfortunately can't be transferred here) so easy to take advantage of. Any advice appreciated before I start the search...thanks.

Nothin you can do except start looking and interviewing.... and ask for employer's references and one that has elderly experience.

Sure you hear and read about lots of terrible experiences from others... but there are lots who have good experience but would be less likely to vent in here.

My 100 year old grandma, strong and healthy has a great helper for 5 years almost 6 years .... and she at first didn't like her... but the helper won her heart over....plays card games with her, cooks, cleans, and watch TV with her..... peace of mind for my parents who have to work.

I would suggest, perhaps looking someone with caregiving course credits, or nursing degree, and First aid knowledge would help too.

Have faith and hope for the best.
