I hired a FT live-in DH helper three months ago. She is pleasant, works hard, appears to be honest, etc. However she can only cope with the basics: cleaning, washing , ironing plus VERY simple shopping/errands. Anything beyond that (more complicated errands, cooking, regular shopping, freezing food, hygiene, western food, planning, etc) and she's overwhelmed, confused, crying, forgets everything, etc. I have spent many many hours trying to reduce her nervousness, increasing her training and showing her how to cook western food, writing out chores in detail, running over everything 2-3 times to make sure she understands it, offering to send her on course etc. I even hired another maid to come in sundays for 2-3 hours to do the ironing and other errands. After 3 months she appears to be making more mistakes and not less. I'm concerend as we're having a baby in the next couple of months and I feel she is already struggling to manage - how will she cope with this PLUS a kid, and how can I rest easy and return to work? My husband believes my standards are too high and that we should keep her and just grit our teeth as he believes she'll eventually improve through repetiton, repetition, repetition. I disagree, and believe she cannot learn or increase her level of education beyond what she can currently do. He also doesn't see the hours I spend training her only to see her go back to 'square one' within days and having to begin all over again. He reckons that we're lucky to find someone honest and hardworking (but not especially 'smart'). I believe we can do way better. She is supposed to have more than 10 years experience - but it's as if every day it's her first day on the job. HELP, are my expectations too high, should I hire another PT maid to cook and do more complicated stuff, is my husband being too short-sighted? I want to be fair to this lady, but want to be fair to us too.

Thks Cara, the second 'Sunday' DH is a local Cantonese lady so not going down the illegal route (have heard too many horror stories from friends) - thks for your thoughts - I'm feeling torn about making this decision and its v welcome to hear feedback from neutral strangers!
