When you are employed by a firm you have sometimes a salary increasing.

Do you increase the salary of your helper during the 2 years of contract? or only each 2 years?

Thanks

i never increase salary, I still give the monthly wage required by the law, but i give extra during her birthday, christmas and chinese new year, in that way she will feel happy, and everytime I hand her bonus, I always tell her,"Thanks for being hard working and a good person to my kids"....and I always see her face glow. Since I tried this, I see her getting better all the time. Well there is no perfect helper and employer, but you just have to find a way to make things work out between both of you. And that does not include salary increase all the time.

Agree with abby78. I give my helper the current wage also. The idea of giving them bonuses, gifts and small tips for various reasons without any obligation is totalling the right attitude and the helpers themselves would appreciate the unexpected gestures more. At least my helper seems to be as she looks so happy and all smiling everytime I give her something regardless of the value. Even a word of praise now and then make her face glow as abby78 puts it.

Having said that, I want to bring up something a bit related to wage (salary) for helpers. A lot of propective employers complained in another thread that some helpers not keeping their promises and not turning up even after accepting the relevant job offers could be due to the fact they are waiting for the highest bidder which is a very unhealthy trend. Guess some of us know what it is all about!!!

I am so interested in what others have to say on this topic - as I've just got kind of 'burned' on this one. I only have one helper, she's been with us for 3 years, and I've been using bonuses/gifts to reward extra effort / extra good work. During the first 2 years she did well and I was happy to give her the extra money.

But after I renewed her contract her work performance has markedly gone down hill, but she's still holding her hand out for extra bonuses. I am afraid that if I don't give the extra money she will get moody and start causing problems, so now I feel obliged to keep giving her extra tips even though I'm not satisfied, and even though I clearly explained to her that extra money would only be in return for extra hard work or excellent standards.

I'm now in the process of looking around for a new helper, which makes me feel sad as we've all got used to the present one. Not only that, it makes me wonder, if I find an ideal new helper, how can I prevent the same problem from arising again? Should I never give her anything extra / above the minimum? Seems a bit harsh. But if I use the same method, like using tips / bonuses as incentives, will I end up with the same problem all over again in 2-3 years from now?

my helper started at the minimum wage of 3400/- and she just signed her 2nd contract with us to which i increased her salary to 4000/-. but i feel she deserves it. shes a good person, tks cr of my whole house and 2 kids. i also gv btw 300-500 on occassions depending what it is. i think it defers person to person. i hv friends who have had their helpers for 8 yrs and they hv never gvn an increase. there is no obligation. u do what u feel u are comfortable with.

I pay ours $6,000 incl food allowance. And extra one month salary ($5,000) at X-mas, and $500 at CNY, and another $500 on her b-day.. so I guess, yes there are helpers that are paid more than yours.. She works hard and she deserves it i think...

Now you see why the helpers stood some of you up - I'm not saying that money doesn't matter but the whole point of trying to find a suitable employer/employee seems to be quite mixed up here and this unhealthy trend of who's paying the most gets the helper makes this a very weird market.

i don't think it is unique to dh positions for potential job applicants to be swayed by salary.

companies offer "competitive salaries" in order to obtain and retain the best employees. psychologically, it makes you feel good to hear, "we think you are worth more than the going rate."

many employees will accept minimum wage if they see that the whole company is living a frugal existence. however, if they see that the directors & management are living it up, spending money that they claim they don't have, they get discouraged.

while money does matter, i think what counts most to employees in every positon, is being empowered and treated with respect. i hear this time and time again.

the helpers give up their lives and their children to make sure they can provide for them - and yes FKKC, if they are going to give up that much of course they would do it for the most money they can find. I agree with abitnaive - most of us would leave our employer if someone offered us more money - this is how world works!

I pay mine more than most people I know - but she is very experienced and by the way, I am just matching her previous salary. And maybe I give her more in bonuses than some because I appreciate what she does, and face it, with both of us working - we would be stuffed without her!

Thanks for all your comments.

Today I give her 4000HK$ per month.

She has a child in her country, and Santa has brought her a air ticket to spend the xmas time with him. It was an extra bonus for her good job during the year.

Anyway, the minimum of salary has increased from 3400 to 3480HK$ so 2.4% more.

I pay her more than the minimum because she has a lot of experience (more than 10Y), and is a good employee.

I think that I will follow the increase of minimum salary and will give her 4100HK$.
