Hiring through agency or not? Interview?

Hi,

After 4 years here and second child on the way, I give up and am looking for a FT helper.

1. Is it better or just easier and more expensive through an agency?

3.Any tips on interviewing -ie questions, referees?

Thanks, Steff

If you employ an Indonesian helper, you have to go through an agency, and that means your helper arrives with a $22K debt. Bear that in mind...

you can ask some of your friends helper if they know a friend that they are looking a new helper. thanks let me ask you when do you need a helper and what nationalities u need?

Call the employers directly, don't rely on a written reference. Ask them why they are not renewing the contract. If they say it's because they don't need a helper then I would be careful - everyone who can afford it could benefit from more help around the house (ok, unless a very tidy single person who loves housework and laundry).

It doesn't matter what you ask - go with your gut feeling. Just make sure you have an interview in person, I cannot believe how so many people will employ a helper based on a video or even less. Mad mad mad.

I went through an agency and so far (touch wood), it seems to be working and she is very good. I wouldn't go by recommendations from other helpers, because at the end of the day the helper recommending might be great, but the one being recommended might not be. Also the paperwork is ridiculous and it's just great to have an agency who know the ins and outs and can get things done.

We found our own helper through friends which i think is the best way, but used an excellent agency who I could recommend and they do also locate and provide short lists of helpers for you to meet. Don't be afraid to ask helpers for friends, but only ask those who you think are doing a great job, they're more like to only recommend someone who they think is okay. PM me if you would like the details.
