My Indonesian helper did not return after her day off yesterday. Normally she is always back on time. She did not call, she did not look distressed when she left in the morning, we have good relationship, she did not seem upset or bothered about anything, I know well her family background and events.
I called the police. They said that most probably she ran away. I doubt that because she did not take anything including her precious photos and sports clothes. She looked all right and made plans for the next weekend. Besides, I never heard of Indonesian helpers running away from a Western employer who pays her above the average and treats as an equal. Canada? She seemed to be happy here. I am very confused and since the police advised to contact the agent I'll have to wait till 12.00
ANY ideas as to what could have happened? I am worried and feel very uncomfortable.

does your building have cctv cameras? if so ask to see them at the approximate time your helper left the building on saturday. you can also ask the guards if she was carrying a suitcase, or if she has been seen leaving the premises with bags, etc.
you might want to ask the other helpers in your building, particularly if there are any other indonesian helpers that she might have confided in. especially if it is apparent that you are concerned rather than angry, i think they would share if they knew anything. that is my experience.
i hope she turns up safely with a logical excuse.

Please let us know. I had a helper disappear once. It turned out she was pregnant and too ashamed to tell us, but she didn't leave anything. That is worrisome. Contact the HK police, the Indonesian Consolate and I'd even give a photo to the SCMP and ask them to help..

give it a rest people, not sure sure the story is true - the person who posted it seems brand new to the forum and ignored your questions for how many days now? so give it up, me thinks

I hope this particular helper returns safe, it would be nice if the person who posted her missing would keep the forum informed.
In a completely seperate incident a helper from DBay went missing in a distressed state, just over a week ago, she was found dead in the lake in Tung Chung this Saturday just gone. I don't know of the full circumstances, but there are postings on the DBay websight, she was a Phillapino lady, my heart goes out to her family and friends.

Hi there, I am sorry to hear about your maid but unfortunately the police may be right about her. I had the perfect maid before she too ran off and a month later I recieved phone calls from her friends asking if I needed a maid and said she had gone to Canada and informed them I would need a maid. We treated her so well when others hear what we give her and pay her they all think I am spoiling the market even for expats. It is irrational but I think we have to resign to the fact such things happened. At least your comfort would be that you have alerted the police and if she did not go to Canada or somewhere else, you did your best to deal with the situation. But trust what the police said, they get this sort of reports about maids disappearing all the time. I would say this is all because the employer is not allowed to keep the maid's passport and give it to her whenever she needs it because they have their passports with them, they can just leave us behind and run off without considering their responsibilities.

I second Island Hopper. Besides, even if you keep your helper's passport, if she wants to take off, she would. It's very easy to get a new passport, just tell the Consulate that she lost her passport and that she needs a new one as her employers are taking her with them to a trip.
It all depends on the person whether she does something right or wrong. It's her freedom. It doesn't mean that when one did something bad, you'll not trust anyone who'll come your way. i.e. previous helper ran off and din't come back so you take your new helper's passport as you're avoiding such circumstance to happen again
just a comment :)

What do you mean the "help" are free to come and go.......absolutely preposterous. How ever would we manage....... such talk is a real concern indeed that people could even think such a thing. Our 19th century lifestyles and values must persevere! Retain the passport you cad!

Ladies, you might investigate the legalities of witholding the passport of another person, under Hong Kong Law.
