Our helper is leaving after 6 months she has resigned. When she leaves should i check her things to make sure she hasn't got anything belonging to us. I know it sounds awful but she hasn't been at all loyal to our family?

I wouldn't exactly check her stuff, but you could -
1. watch her as she packs, so that she has no chance to go round taking your stuff, and if she's already stolen any items belonging to you you will see them as she packs them in her bags
2. Check your home for things that might be missing
3. Don't give her too much advance notice of her dismissal if you have good reason to think she'll use the time to steal / damage your things. When the situation is very negative like this, don't tell her before you actually fire her, and then give her one hour to leave, and watch her for the whole of that hour. It's not very nice but if you do need to protect yourself then that's what you should do.

I would agree with Beancurd- make it a mutual thing and explain to her that it is in her own interest that you check her things.
You should also change the locks as soon as you can in case she has copies somewhere.
