would you give your helper notice if you were going to fire them - i.e. one month to find another job - or would you get them out on the spot?
it is not working out with our helper. nice enough lady, but thinks she is my childrens mother and constantly interferes in my parenting. I have talked to her many times but when ever i try to sit down with her she ends up YELLING at me ??????? then bursts into tears.
i'm worried about risk of allowing her to stay in the house once we've told her we're going to replace her but at the same time i want her to have a fair shot at finding another job (i.e. not just two weeks before she has to leave the country).

oh my! does not sound good at all - i would not put up with it, I am afraid - you are the mother, they are your childrend and not your helper's! even tho in my case my helpers def spend more time with them than I (as i work) they still do what I tell them (at least as far as I know!!) - if my helper has a suggestion, she would run it past me first - including what to cook for them.
it would be nice for her to have a month to find a job - but would you be nervous having her around for that month? i can imagine how hard it will be. so I am afraid only to can decide whether you are comfortable having her around for that month..

i'm not sure. i've just heard such bad things about if you let them stay.
i'd love it if someone could tell me they have let their helper work for a month and its all worked out okay!

Just give 1 months salary and let her go. Do Not keep her in your flat. People need to remember...She works for you. She's not your friend. Giving her 1 month salary and a plane ticket home. Besides, she's going to have to leave HK anyway before she can be hired again.

Agree with SharJen, you will give her the one month and airfare if you terminate her, so no need for that 2 months notice, too long. If terminated, usually, the following day, you are out. But with your consideration, maybe 2 weeks is enough. Good luck!

I also agree with the one month salary and airfare. You're firing her because you're unhappy with her so you're not ending the contract on 'good' terms therefore she may not be happy with that. Also, if you give her one or two months' notice, you also have to give her time off to find a new job and she'll be ringing around, etc. so will she still be alert enough to look after your kids? I wouldn't risk it.

I know how you feel as I'm in the same situation myself. I'm not looking forward to terminating my present helper and asking her to leave within 1-2 hrs, it seems so harsh, but I am sure that is the right thing to do. I am not going to give her the chance to cause extra trouble, which I have reason to believe she would if I gave her 30 days' notice.
About finding a job in just 2 weeks, it's not actually as bad as it sounds because the whole system is set up to move fast. Because most helpers only have 2 weeks to find a job, they like to sign within a few days of a successful interview / trial day, and employers know this. If your helper is determined to find a new position and is smart, she'll do a whole bunch of interviews in the first week and sign in the second. She has the advantage of being available for interview every day of the week, unlike many DH who can only interview on Sundays.
Summary - it is such a bad idea to have a disgruntled employee living in your home for a whole month, especially if you have children.

if you want to give her a fair shot, you can give her a months notice bt tell her to leave your home and give your keys back..
but you wont be able to process for a new one until her notice runs out

applebubble, I cant see why one can not start processing a new helper until the end of notice, surely people have a right to have a second and a third helper if they wish? this could be an new helper in addition to the existing one - so surely the immigration can process her.

ldsllvn, you can process but youll have to pay the full levy for the new one as there will be an over lap of helpers..
i know so coz i just process our new contract.. and the previous maid was given a month notice... but i didnt have to go home as my employers moved out of hk..
but yes it will cause trouble if she is still there esp after she meets the new maid.. i had a lot of problems with the maid that i replaced... i mean she caused a lot of trouble.. gossips around saying bad things about the boss etc...
