A helper came for interview and trial. Her contract is finished. She kept on saying"ohsh*t"twice when she made a mistake. And the most imp thing I am uncomfortable with is when we asked if we could speak to her employer, she said she would be happy if we didn't as she has told them she has already found a job and her luggage is still there or if we had too, then say we are from TST (as that is what she has told them).I am just not comfortable, I know sometimes even employers recommendations don't help. what do I do?

Why are you asking, if you are not comfortable with her then don't employ her.

Lots of helpers don't want you to speak to their previous employer. I wouldn't be too spooked about this.
Language. This is easily corrected.
In the end I agree with cd though. If you are not comfortable with her...

I would be spooked too. why would they not want you to speak to prev employer if all was well? I spoke to 3 (!) prev employers when I was hiring ours - she had nothing to hide. I would not hire a helper unless i could check her refrences and speak to previous employer - as for language - agree, easily corrected.

"Why would they not want you to speak to prev employer if all was well?"
- There are old employers who simply don't want to be references.
- The helper may have left because she disliked working for them.
- The old employer may be unhappy with the helper not renewing her contract and feel vindictive.
We didn't speak to any old employers. References should not be taken as gospel. They should be a support for a decision, not the basis for it.

Agreed :))

well, in that case, the helper should be able to explain to you why she has reservations about you talking to her previous employer. Then, i would still insist on speaking with the employer (with what the DH told me in mind) - and make my own judgement - the DH might be lying, the employer might be lying - as long as you remember that there are two sides to each story and go with your gut feeling...

My previous helper didnt want me to contact her previous employer but I insisted. It got her the job because I believed that if the helper couldn't stand the utter cow employer then she had good sense.

Yes of course.

I don't agree. The helper being trustworthy cannot be determined from references, at least not beyond a vague feeling.
