Hello there,

i'm wondering what should we pay to good dh to keep them happy but not overpay.

Would you ask dh how much they expect to be paid during the interview?

thanks

I would not ask that. It think it sets the wrong tone. You need to know how much you will pay her, and tell her that. Of course it can be negotiable but it needs to be your initiative.

A good helper can make 5000-6000 including any food allowance.

You can also give perks like extra vacation, a laptop with Internet, etc...

As cara says, bonuses can play an important part. It may be better to have a lower wage with a high bonus. Gives you more flexibility. Also this gives more of a feel good factor when she gets the bonus. It has the air of a windfall.

You could offer x, then increase after three months (and retroactively) if she performs well.

"Does contract state any trial period? "

I am assuming that it can if you want it to. You'd have to check government guidelines to see if such a proviso is lega.

The only thing with low wage and a bonus is the women can't make financial plans based on a bonus in case they don't get it. So they might well not accept a job for minimum when they are used to being paid more. (who would) so it depends on the person and there experience and how much you want to employ them. I am very happy to pay a higher salary plus bonus as our helper is great and i want both her and us to be happy. I'm not convinced that minimum wage encourages the most from a person no matter what the job especially in someone who has experience. To me it states straight away that we don't value your skills or abilities.

I know lots of people that can only afford to pay the minimum, or slightly over, ourselves included, without big bonuses and perks and non of us have had any trouble finding a DH. It would help so much if they did away with the helper levy as we could pay that to the DH instead.

I think you should start off lower, and pay bonuses for good work if you can afford to. Once you increase their salary you're stuck with that even if they don't perform well. But awarding good work should hopefully mean they strive to do their best all the time.

cd - you put a very decent picture to the whole DH scene. Good advice with a lot of common sense.

sorry to hi-jack? when do you pay bonuses? as a regular thing - I dont mean the annual one - we pay that arund x-mas - extra 1 month pay - I mean - $500 here and there? we do for their b-day and then for something special, like when my kids were in hospital - the DHs stayed with them a couple of nights to give me a break - I really was so happy they did - so we gave them extra for that. Any other times?

for the original q - we pay ours $6,000 incl food allowance.

Hear hear. But it does also depend on the employer.

"when do you pay bonuses?"

Typically arond Christmas and/or CNY. An extra month pay. We don't pay "500 here and there". Of course we can ask her to work a holiday (and she would have to agree) and we would then pay for that extra day.
