As it's my first time looking for a helper, I'm really clueless as to what the procedures and obligations are. I know I want to find someone who has been here a while and hopefully we will be getting someone whose finished her contract, or maybe someone who wants to get out of their contract. What do I have to do? Do I just sign a contract saying we will be employing her and therefore she doesn't need to leave HK or how? thanks for any help, sorry to be so ignorant but I am quite worried about this as I don't know the first thing about this!

In your situation (and we've all been there, I guess) my suggestion would be to get a good agency to help. Whether they find the candidates or if you find her yourself through a recommendation a good agency can do all the paperwork, arrange medical stuff, and go to immigration as required. All you should have to do is interview, select, pay and sign the paperwork.
You don't want to miss some crucially important minor detail and end up not having your helper start. Totally worth the comparatively low fee. Quite frankly even with some experience I would still do it this way. It's just easier.
I have sent you a PM with details of a good agency.

Just one note. She doesn't need to go back to the country of origin. She just needs to leave HK except for the case noted by Peggie Wong.

axptguy38,
May I also have the name of the agency you'd recommend?
Thank you

thanks for all the input. I've got in contact with an agency now. I've some more questions.. 1. Is $3,500 the average going price for an agency to find you a provide you with a helper that is in HK already? Do they usually include the medical exam or is that additional? I've some friends who are locals are paid a lot less...they think because I asked in English it was more! Is this a common occurance or it is just difference between agencies?
