We just bought an return air ticket for our helper to go to the Philippines in the summer on Cebu Pacific Airlines. She said that it is not a "good airline" and would rather have gotten a ticket on Philippine Airlines but she didn't tell us ahead of time until we showed her the ticket now. But she didn't say WHY Cebu is not good and wouldn't give a specific reason.
Can anyone tell me if she is correct and if so, what the reasons are for Cebu not being a "good" airline.
Not safe? Rude service? Can't take much luggage? etc.

Basically the flight is only 2 hours so I doubt it's anything to do with service. I think it's luggage. But why don't you get the agency to do it??

PAL and CEBU are the same when it comes to safety.
I could say theres a big difference in service (PAL is better in a sense they have much better food than Cebu) and the space between seats is comfortable than that of Cebu)
And YES, they are very strict about luggage. 1 kg excess, you MUST pay it..NOT in PAL though.
Personally, I would take PAL even I pay extra for the ticket.

pal: serves in fligt snacks/meals
cebu: no meals
pal: the international and domestic termionals are side by side so the passenger wont have to travel far if going on a connecting flight
cebu: the international flights land at the old international airport (NAIA) and domestic flight is in the old domestic airport (about 5-10mins away by cab)
based on this id personally take pal if i got extra cash

This only really matters if you have to transfer. If, for example, the helper is flying to Cebu she can go direct from HKG.

well, there was a thread on this recently - we all I think agreed that it was just down to the fact that luggage allowance was a bit less than Pal. That is all. Suggest she pays the difference if she wants the choice of airlines - as PAL more often than not tends to be a lot more expensive - see what she says to that.

Agree with ldsllvn. I recently bought a ticket from Cebu for about HKD900 round trip. My helper kept asking me to get either CX or PAL which was going to cost me more than 2k (or was it 3k). I asked her if she wants to pay the difference to take the other airlines which she then says "I think Cebu is fine mum".
I assured her I will give her some food allowance though..

Agreed with gum. I mean if it's a 15 hour flight and the chosen airline is really crappy is one thing, but for an hour or two anyone can survive even the crappies low cost carrier seats and "service.

I think there is a general consensus amongst Phillipinas in HK that Cebu is very, very dangerous and two of our helpers in the past absolutely refused to fly on it (although we would, for the price). I went to an aviation website that has statistics on fatal air crashes and it wasn't that different from any other airlines.

While your point (that they are just as safe) is valid, such crash statistics tend to be useless for a few reasons:
- There aren't enough crashes all told to make for valid statistics.
- Even those few crashes are for a variety of disparate reasons.
In the end, flying is extremely safe.
1 crash in the history of an airline (as in the CP case) doesn't mean the airline is currently unsafe (or safe).
The exception would be some third world airlines and airports where the crash frequency really is unusually high. Most of those are to be found in Africa. If you're comparing PAL and Cebu Pacific they are basically just as safe.

Arrived last night from MNL by Cebu Pacific. Yes, there was no food, but I ate before the flight at the waiting area.
They even had games during the flight but was so tired and slept all the way to Guangzhou.
The seats reminded me of bus seats, but so what it's so cheap.
This is from someone who fly first or business class when hubby's company is paying.
Reminder, next time I should bring bring a shawl or a sweater.

personally for us we never have any problem with cebu airline, the only thing is that they dont serve food,which is not a problem if you are only flying for 2 hours, for luggage i never have a problem, of course as other airlines they ask you pay for excess luggage. If you travel alone Cebu is no problem, but if you travel by an infant, its not a good idea becuase the seats are so close to each other and you dont have space for your baby infront of you.
Its a budget airline, dont expect much.

Cebu pacific is definitely cheaper if you buy the ticket for your helpers ahead of time. It's not a BAD airline. In fact, funny thing after reading this thread... I have to add my reply.... my helpers prefer CEBU Pacific. Because they say PAL is ALWAYS delayed and not on time!
My helpers have to transfer in Manila back to their province... but if they don't give me advance notice, I end up buying them CX or PAL because Cebu is always full if less than 4-5 months prior travel date.
Of course, CX and PAL are more comfortable, and with meals, etc.... however, you're the one paying for the ticket, I think Cebu Pacific meets the requirement for the helper's air ticket to go home.
It never hurts to ask for the "better" brand right? You just have to say no.
Cebu Pac isn't BAD, it's just not as "branded" as PAL or CX.

Sure, but you could do the same on any "accident prone" airline. You'd have to fly several times a day to make it useful statistics. And even then the most "dangerous" airlines in the world are still safer than taking a taxi in HK without a seatbelt.
