We are thinking of giving our helper driving lessons as a xmas present (for various reasons). Can anyone recommend a good driving school? Are there any schools with teachers who speak tagalog (philippino)? Does anyone know what the costs involved are?
Thanks.

are you shouldering the exam costs and license too?
on top of my head when i was doing my lessons years ago - it costs a total of between 7 thou k up... nearer 10k. depends if your helper needs extra hours for practice
there is a minimum 30 hours of driving hours requirement before taking the tests.
there is a list of private instructors on the transport dept website. or you could go to the hk school of motoring.

This is something I wanted to do too. But I was advised by others not to. When she gets her driver's license (at your expense), her market value doubles or triples. So unless you are prepared to significantly increase her pay when her contract renews, or match any other offer she may receive from other recruiters, you may want to seriously reconsider that.
True to their warnings, most recently, I was looking for a second helper and I was interested in this one candidate who had her driver's license. Turns out that she just got her driver's license in May, (must have waited until her contract ended), and was shopping for a new contract. She asked me if I can outdo her current offer of $8,000. I took that as a bad sign and declined.
I think it's great if it works out for you and she stays loyal to you, but know that there is a big premium for helpers with driver's licenses.

Actually our helper is emigrating early next year and we thought it would be a nice thank you and farewell present. I didn't realise it was so expensive in HK though!

Hey there we are trying to find a lady domestic helper who can also drive and found one who only has 7 months driving experience in HK. She's asking for "at least 8k" which I thought was a bit steep given she is currently only on 6k. What do you think?

You need to also clear this with immigration - also, once she has a licence to drive in HK she will expect a salary of 8-10k a month !!!!!!
