How do I confront my helper about stealing?

My money has been walking out of my wallet. Before I wasn't very careful with how much is in my wallet. I suspected one time and start to track since. The confirmed loses have been 100, 500, 20, 1000 (depend on how much I leave in my wallet).

I have two helpers, I suspect it's the new one since this didn't happen prior to her arrival (at least not to my knowledge). I am planning to give the new one termination notice due to of her performance and she knows it.

Now the question is: should I confront her about stealing and how do I obtain the evidence? or should I just let her go immediately without saying anything?

It will break my heart if it's the other one who has been with us for almost 3 years now and we love her dearly. But if I don't confirm, will the question always been with me? It will be terrible that I can't trust her anymore, and won't be fair to her.

Please advise.

It's terrible to have a thief living in your own home. I suggest you read the other thread too.

You need to know which helper it is.

It could be the new helper, or perhaps if the two helpers don't get on, it could be the old helper.

Put a set amount of money in your wallet, a mixture of notes, and leave it lying around in full sight. Ask one helper to go out with you for twenty minutes to clean the car, or to park n shop to buy something, and you need her recommendation. Make sure the other helper hears that you will be out and "oh, where's my octopus card. I can't be bothered to carry so much".

If the money is gone by the time you are back, then it is the helper who stayed at home.

If the money is still there, it doesn't necessarily mean its the helper who went with you to the shop. So you have to set up the sting again.

BTW, I hope its not your teenage kids, if you have any!!!

If you confront either helper they are both more than likely going to deny it. I wouldn't make accusations unless you are 100% sure. Perhaps you need to do the laying of the trap as suggested. Then at least you know for sure which helper is stealing, so if it is the one you suspect, when you do terminate you can say to her "by the way, I know you have been stealing my money and I will be reporting you". Whether you do report her or not is up to you, but it will certainly put the wind up her and she won't be leaving thinking she had one over you. As for getting the money back, cut your losses and be glad you got rid of her.

As for if it's your long term helper, then it's sad but if it is her then I would certainly be terminating her. Once the trust is gone, you will find it very difficult to gain it again. You need to be able to live in your own home without having to lock everything up.

I would definitely do some "research" and have proof, maybe not hard proof but enough to know which helper it is.

Good Luck.

nannycam is a controversial due to the privacy issues ....

for me, for the purposes of catching a thief - i would do it. if you are going to install it without letting them know, do the installation on her day off.

if you are not comfortable with it - you could "scare" the would be thief by saying you have a nannycam
