I would like to hire a domestic helper as we're not happy with our current one.... lazy attitude and unmotivated. What is the best way to hire a dh without paying expensive agency fees?

You can find one here http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/helpers/ or if you need the lowest cost agency services (and I might add the best) call Evelyn in our office 2815 2520

Ed.... this used to be a 'free & effective' service and we used to be able to contact them ourselves personally.

You can still contact the helpers directly if you choose - you simply purchase a membership for HKD200 and that allows you to see the contact tels of the helpers... if you prefer to have agency services Evelyn will assist

I found my current helper via AsiaXpat and I'm never happier. I signed up for membership and interviewed helpers. It's easy to contact them plus you'll see their working experiences, employer reference etc.
If you use this service though, I suggest you have to decide fast when you think or you feel you found the right one for your family since there are so many other employers interviewing them as well.
I've had a couple of helpers interviewed and when I've decided to sign their contract, they're hired already! :)
Good thing about this website is you can call up the helpers and arrange them for an interview or have them come to your place if you like so they can have a feel and vice versa.
Hope you find the one soon.

Anyone else who has experience using asiaxpat agency services? How about other agencies who have "open house" --helpers hanging around waiting for interviews. Any other quick, fast and effective way to find a helper? I want to terminate my helper as soon as I find a new one. Thanks1

I have! I used asiaxpat to find my current one. I paid $200 for the membership and called them myself. When I was interviewing last year, a lot of helpers would make appointments with me and not show up -that was frustrating. Anyway, my helper had an excellent recommendation from her previous employer, and I got a chance to speak to them via email. So far we're happy with her, although we've had some trouble in certain areas, but overall, I find her to be honest, responsible, good-natured, and sweet. So fingers crossed that it stays that way.
I'd recommend using asiaxpat to find a helper, it's cheap, fast, but the down fall is that you have to put in some work yourself. In terms of paperwork for immigration, my helper has been here for over 10 years, so basically she did everything. All I did was sign the papers, give her money and all the necessary documents.
If you're looking to find a new one on Asiaxpat, I recommend surfing the domestic helper section everyday, and the contact the ones you like ASAP, because the good ones are gone FAST!

We also have the lowest cost agency services in town (we charge the helpers nothing) - and the best service.
Our manager Evelyn sees hundreds of helpers who register with us each month so she knows which are the best candidates and can recommend those that are most appropriate to your needs.
There are many dh agencies registered with us so they can contact the helpers - however they have no contact with the helpers so there is no value in their recommendations...

I had a really terrible experience with a helper I got from a suposedly renowned agency used sidely by expat in Sheung Wan. As it happened just one month after, the agency was suppose to give me a replacement at no cost. But I was really not happy with the quality.
In the end, I turned to Asiaxpat.com. The best about this method is that you are able to interview them and talk to their ex employer to validate if what they tell you in the interviews align with what their employers say.
I had one where the helper and employer contradicted each other that I immeidately ruled out. My current had her story and employer matched almost 100%
My current helper turns out to be a blessing! I'm happy to forgo the expensive agency fees for not getting their recommended replacement maid. But I could have been wiser to go straight the the website and not paid the exhibitant fees!

I think finding a good helper is dependent on how well you manage your helpers as well. There needs to be a balance between what you accept and what they can do in accordance to the needs of your household. Good luck!

Definitely a bit of work finding a good employee - domestic helper or otherwise.
Even though it takes a bit of time to browse the helper ads and short list candidates of interest, it's far better than engaging an outside agency to browse the listings for you and create a short list.
They have no contact with the helpers so have no better insights than you would into which helpers would be the most appropriate.
I'd suggest you save money and cut out the agencies because that also saves the helper the placement fee and contact potential hires directly. If you must use an agency I suggest you contact Evelyn 2815 2520 - she is the only agent with any contact with the helpers who register with us
