Helper used Moneyback Points

i'm not sure how the arrangement works in your home but in ours - if the points were going to expire, we whould have been consulted as to how we wanted to spend them, and we would have been informed that the transaction had occurred (and seen the results).

i would sit down and let her know that the points are another form of currency, and you determine how and when they are spent. ask if there is anything else she is unclear about, and possibly go over some issues that you might think are understood, but now you want to clarify.

i wouldn't fire her over this. you have said you like this helper. but i do think you need to tell her your surprise and disappointment and future expectations.

i agree with cara, just tell her not to do it the next time. do not even lecture her, its demeaning just for a few dollars. the second time do lecture her, reminding her of the first time. third, fire her! its hard to talk to people playing deaf.

Here in tokyo we usually use our points to either deduct it from the total bill or we can accumulate it and get something out of their catalog or we get gift certificates, whihc is as good as cash to most departments stores.

I dont know how it works in hongkong but if she used it to pay for the groceries then she should have informed you and should not feel bad about it. she was trying to be prudent and using her judgement. If she mistook it that you will not mind it if she helps herself to it, then knowing thats the case you should draw a clear line, that its not hers till its given.

It was wrong of her to assume that it was hers for the taking. Give her a warning.

Besides, how could she have used your points when the card was in your name?

ParkNShop gave us a card called 'Money Back' and issued 2 smaller ones to go with it so we can give them to our helper or anyone in our household and when buying from Taste, Gourmet & Great and of course ParkNShop, we get points accumulated through our purchases when we show them the card. These points, I gathered are for exchanges of goods from machines which I have tried to get through and wasn't successful and so I gave up (too lazy on my part) and told my helper she can take all the points to get things for herself if she know how to operate the machine which she happily did.

To O.P.

Yes, it was wrong of your helper to take it for granted to use your points without asking. Maybe a lot of DH are doing the same and your helper thought it was alright as she was given the card by you. Talk to her and make her understand that she needs to ask beforehand - communication is very important.

Yes it is stealing and I too would be upset at this. So is pocketing free samples and other similar stuff when you are paying for it. I would not sack her but I would sit her down and tell her that you consider this stealing and it is not acceptable in her employment. She probably thought she could get away with it as you wouldn't notice. Frankly I'd go nuts if my helper redeemed the points and then had the audacity to bring out all the cookware that she had selected for herself. Perhaps you also need to keep an eye on other things just to make sure she's not skimming elsewhere. My ex helper used to come back from the supermarket saying the checkout lady had not given her enough change. This happened about 4 times before I told her that if there was 1000 bucks in the kitty and she had receipts totaling 500 bucks them she owed 500 bucks, even if it came out of her own pocket. funny how she was never short changed again.

Angsana, your helper should count the change before she leaves the supermarket! What a poor excuse! Some of these tricks are imaginative but not good enough.
