Helper return to Philippines due to family issue

My helper has told me she needs to return to the Philippines urgently due to her father being in hospital. She can't tell me at this stage how long she will be.

She has only be with us since October so has no holidays owing etc.

Can anyone tell me what would be considered a reasonable period that she should spend in Philippines?

I would consider 1 month as reasonable. Dependant on your relationship with your helper I would not at this stage pay her flights and tell her that this time off will be unpaid. I would then probably sort out the money when she came back - just being cautious but there is no point in being out of pocket if she does a runner.

I would probably pay her wage but not her flight on her return. Would your employer pay your flights etc ?

as she has only worked for you a short time I wouldn't pay for anything at this stage and inform her that the time off will be without pay, then on her return (if she returns) i would give her the pay for her time off. Better to be safe than sorry....

I would certainly let her go however I would tell her that if she is gone longer than 3 weeks or a month then you really have no option but to get another helper as you need help with the kids etc. I would certainly not pay for any of it - the flights or working time. If she had been in my employment a while, I would reconsider this. You may wish to, on her return pro-rata her holiday e.g. if she gets 7 days a year she has had 7 days in advance and you pay her for this and get her to sign a receipt for it. Sounds harsh but there are just too many scams particularly regarding peoples fathers to pay up front and perhaps never see her again.
