If I plan not to renew the contract with my helper, how much advance notice am I legally required to give? Her contract ends in August. Is it too early to tell her now?

Minimum one months notice.

Thanks cd and GreenValleys for replying.
What GreenValleys mentioned was exactly what prompted me to ask this question. We are on ok terms. I mean, not very friendly and open that we can discuss anything, but quite a mutually respectful relationship. However, I am not sure how she would take the news of us not renewing her contract. I wanted to give her 3 months notice / preparation, but not sure if this would be too much.
Note: the non-renewal has nothing to do with her behaviour / performance. We just wanted the spare bedroom back, and since it is illegal to have her live outside, we will be hiring a legal live-out instead.

Heard on the news today that an employer gave notice to fire her helper and the helper put bleach into the milk bottle to feed the employer's nine-month old baby.

It's true. I heard exactly the same news report about a helper deliberately trying to poison her employer's baby (after she was given termination notice) by putting bleach into the baby's milk bottle. In fact, it's on the front page of Yahoo! HK version at the moment (for those who can read chinese). Everyone at my office is talking about it today.
To answer the question in the OP, if your helper is finishing the contract, legally you don't need to give her any notice whatsoever if you are not going to renew. If you are terminating her employment, you need to give her one month's notice.
What GreenValleys posted earlier is exactly correct, and is good advice.

Agree with Greenvalleys and up to you to make the decision based on how you feel your relationship is like. The longer the notice you give, the better it'll work for her. But if you really feel uneasy with having her in your house long after notice of non-renewal, you don't have to feel guilty of a short notice. Many employers do that for valid reasons -- i know some companies when they fire people (not non-renewal) they ask you to go to the senior's office to be notified and you are asked to leave from there directly without even having the chance to pack your stuff (which they'll send to you) just so that you don't have the chance to take any confidential documents, etc.
Good luck

Thanks all for your advices. I think I'll give her 2 months notice.
By the way, do I pay her cash for the outstanding vacation days? and how should I calculate that?

Giving her at least two months notice is a good things to do,so,both parties could start to find a replacement.and that will also shows that you're a good employer and care for her getting a new job that she would appreciate, and as beancurd said you can give her 14 days annual leave or she can leave your house 14 days earlier plus her full month salary.
