Helper Lied

ORIGINAL POST

My close friends Helper's ' family member died ' a few days ago and my friend immediately flew her home and lent her money. My friend has been incredibly good to her helper in terms of lending money, travel, leave etc, etc. The helper has quite a bit to do with my friends child. I have found out that she lied about the death.

What do I do ? My source of info needs to be protected, she would be in an awful situation should this helper lose her job. I also know the helper involved and she is a good person with financial responsibilities to family at home and needs the job.

I feel an obligation to my friend, esp since the helper deals with the child allot.

Thoughts ???????????

Who is your source? You should also consider the possibility that the source is lying. Maybe she has a grudge against your friends helper. Not sure how reliable death certificates are from Phil/Indo. It seems pretty easy for people from those countries to get passports with different names and birth dates, the same may be true for death certificates. Alternatively it may be expensive for them to get legit death certificates.

Dont want to add salt to the wound.. but my helper did the same. She told me her daughter was intensive care and dying. She fell to the floor sobbing with a performance worthy of an Oscar.. I fell for it hook line and sinker, gave her advance salary, paid her airfare.. I rang my agent and she told me to get a death certificate however, I told my agent that it was a unkind to do so especially when she was so distraught already. The tell tale sign was when she sneaked out of the house at 6am packing ALL her clothes and leaving a few winter clothes discretely in her bedroom in plain birds eye view to make it look like she was coming back. I was at that time heavily pregnant and about to go to hospital.. so I was in a real limbo. Anyway lesson learnt.......

any maid whose performance worth of an Oscar should be terminated at spot, pay whatever legally is required (employers have 7 days to pay anyways) so departure can be immediate.

Our helper did this exact thing.... her Grandmother had died and we flew her back for the funeral... but really she was on holiday with a new boyfriend. ( She had openly bragged about it to other helpers at playgroup) We asked for the death certificate and she pretended to be inslulted, pouted but could not produce it... in the end we dismissed her as this was the final straw! I was pregnant and unwell at the time, decided she could not be trusted! Let it go.... no way!

I think this happened to me recently too. It was three months before the end of my helper's contract (we'd already decided not to renew) and heard while he was away that it was likely a story .... we decided to let it go. WOuld only let it go once though - my next helper will face much more stringent questioning.

I wouldn't get too involved in matters which the responsibilities are not directly mine. I understand that you care for both parties, but this sort of catch 99 situation can make you go mad!

I guess this sort of issue is a risk for all employers concern. Some point in our lives, I am sure we've called in sick just to take time off work. So, it's rather not fair to only call DH liars.
