We had a firedn whose DH of 4 years in HK, "disappeared" the day they landed in the UK. She was waiting for the opportunity for years. be careful.

There are indeed helpers who run away in Europe, but you can't just say something like that. They won't all run away.

Note, though, that to retain her it is probably wise to offer a competitive wage for the local market (UK). The HK wage may be too low.

I think you are generalizing too broadly.

I will, however, say that employers need to understand that the labor market in the UK is completely different. The helper will no longer be under a HK style FDH contract, and thus no longer bound to one employer. Any good employer understands that a helper can quit her job. If the employer wants to retain the employee, he/she needs to take steps to make continued employment attractive, in this case primarily a good salary.

anya - it is relatively easy, or so i hear as long as the helper has been with you for over a year or something like that - call the UK consulate for details. however, the min wage for the helper in UK is GBP450-500 a week - so be prepared to pay GBP2,000 a month to her otherwise she WILL run as she can find this sort of money elsewhere easy

I think they would run also, have you looked at the news lately about the recession in UK, there are so many people being made redundant, and some happy to be doing a maids job, so why would a prospective employer want to empIoy an imported one, there are also so many 'illegal' people being exploited if she did try to run for freedom, and government there is cracking down on immigrants, so she probably would not get a visa. Tell her the grass isn't always greener in Europe.

For liveouts in the UK the wage is about GBP 8-10 per hour, particularly in more affluent areas. I personally agree it's not worth bringing your helper; we did, and it didn't work out well. Greed took over and everything changed. Same thing for our friends' and their DH's, and yes, we were all good to our employees, upped the wages, and decreased the hours. There's TONS of help to be had in the UK, and of even a better caliber than the domestic help we received in HK. You don't need to bring the help with you. Good luck.
