First time to hire

We are hiring a FDH whose current employer is leaving the country. She is in her third year with them but didn't go home at the end of her first contract. We would like her to start ASAP and then have a holiday after a month or so. She is happy with this arrangement but says she will only get a visa for 1 year. Does anyone know the implications of this other than that she will have to apply for another visa after a year?

She is incorrect. FDH visas are always for two years. She simply starts from zero with you.

My experience when my helper started working for me was she DID only get a 1 year visa even when the contract was 2 years. After the first year, she went to immigration to get it renewed. Upon contract renewal, she got a 2 years visa.

Perhaps immigration just want to make sure the new employer works out before granting the full 2 years? I don't know.

Well, even those of us on working visas of the non-FDH variety need to get them renewed yearly.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, the visa will be for one year at a time. But the contract will be for two years.
