Small beds for DH

ORIGINAL POST

There are something like 300,000+ domestic helpers in hong kong, but trying to work out where to buy them a small sized bed (without it being a kid's bed) is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

The few threads i've found raise the same question i'm facing; needing a bed & mattress measuring a maximum of 36"W x 72"L, with next to no answers, and the only solution i can find is pricerite who will make them for almost HK$3000.....more than we paid for our queen sized bed.

Wondering if anyone has some up to date info on this they can share? Market opportunity here surely????

I paid a little bit less than 2000$ for my helper's set from a small furishing shop, and the name is a bit like Gothic furnishing or something like that.

Try "Modern House" on 60 Java Road in North Point. They have plenty of beds with mattress in store and in catalog. With drawers or not etc... And yes, you can get one in "helper room" size.

I would recommend supplementing the mattress with a mattress pad from IKEA. Increases comfort dramatically. The pad will be a bit too wide (92cm) but you can fold it a bit at the sides.

We had one made to order. We are actually selling ours and the measurements sound the same. I can pm you with the details if you like. I think our measurements are roughly 30 x 65 and it has built in table, cupboards for hanging space and drawers.

Try Seahorse - they do custom-made mattress sizes at good prices.

Jade Rattanware has quite a good selection of small-sized beds for around HK$1000. About 1-1/2 years ago, we got a 2-1/2 ft (30") W by 6 ft (72") L bed plus a (thinnish) mattress there for under HK$1500. It's not the most solid thing in the world (they use pine wood) and the mattress is quite thin - and our helper found it too hard. We ended up getting a foldable foam mattress (same size) and which fit perfectly on top (from Seahorse) to make it more comfortable and she seems happy in it now.

Thanks for the advice. Java road in North Point is a good starting point for anyone looking, though you may find that easiest with a Cantonese speaker. I ended up getting the bed custom made at Jade Rattan in Fortress Hill. The guy there was excellent and together we designed an exact fit for the room. It still ended up costing $2850 as i went for the thickest mattress for the helper - the basic mattresses they provide for the cheapest option are so thin that i wouldn't let a cat sleep on them - but it is robust, well made and fits absolutely perfectly.

As to bedding, the helper got it all for under $500 from Seahorse in the Wanchai open market.
