I live in HK and would like to find a domestic helper whose first language is Chinese (either Putonghua or Cantonese), as a great means to have my kids (7 and 5) learn the language, which they take at school as a second language. Beyond that, we are rather undemanding and I can therefore focus on that feature - plus enough English to communicate. Is there a market for such helpers in HK, either locals or from Taiwan or the Mainland?
Thanks

There are loads of people with Chinese domestic helpers, mostly employed on a part time basis. They are much more expensive than live in Foreign Domestic Helpers but usually are hired on a part-time basis eg 1pm to 8pm 5 days a week, and a live out, and this will cost about $4000-5000 a month I think for these hours as compared to a FDH who will work 6 days a week usually about 12 hours a day for $3580. Lots of locals prefer this as they are obviously better at buying food locally and cooking Chinese food (as they are Chinese!). Often though, they can't speak English much at all. You can see this link for details of examples of hours and prices you would be expected to pay http://www1.jobs.gov.hk/eng/jobseeker/domestic/result.aspx?cd=900&SearchType=OCP Hope that helps. Let us know how you get on, we are also thinking of getting a Chinese helper for language reasons.
