We have three helpers. We returned from a few weeks away and we have found a few things missing. An expensive watch and some gem stones that we bought when on vacation in Sri Lanka last year. The gems were in a small bag that was in another bag hidden under some clothes in a drawer. There were other items in the house of more value than all of these but they were not touched.
It seems obvious that someone in the house took these things because if it were a break-in or someone had access to the house they would have taken more things.
We have asked all the helpers and none are acting suspicious. We have asked them if anyone had access to the house while we were away and nobody did.
We don't have any proof that one or more of the helpers was involved but we feel that almost certainly we have a thief living with us :(
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what to do?

why not threaten one to let her go "because we have a thief living with us" and cannot bear that. and then see whether she will tell you who she thinks it was.
do it for all three and you might get an idea who it really was

1. If possible put valuables (watches, rings, necklesses etc) locked away eg. safe, drawer, briefcase.
2. For deterrent, install a webcam that can either record or log into via the web.
3. If you are so sure that one of the helpers committed the crime then give them 1 week to own up otherwise all 3 helpers gets terminiated.

blame your self, why not look after your own kids and clean your own house.
problem would go away.

Cookie09's suggestion doesn't work if was one of them and she's cold nosed or if all 3 share the loot. Furthermore they could have had friends over when you were away, and one of them went trough your drawers, rather than taking something obvious ...none of your DHs may have noticed.
There's no privacy in your home if you have a helper; like it or not, you gotta lock away anything which you don't want them to see or take. You could install a movement-sensitive small cam which records at certain times for example sundays within your holidays.

Don't blame them directly, as you can then be in turn charged with false allegations.
There has been a theft in your home while you were not there. Don't muck around and call the police and let them sort it out. They most probably can't do much at this stage, but it sends a strong and clear message to all the three employees. They also can not make accusations of bias on your part. Worst case, you have it on record if something like this happens again. Keep in mind, that you just never know if there has been a genuine break-in.
Maybe, you invest in a small safe in future.

Terminate all three of them. legally you should give them notice, or pay in lieu. Given the circumstances, I would give them pay in lieu, otherwise they'll spend the next month stealing everything you own. Make sure you let the immigration department know it's for suspected theft.
At least one of them is guilty, and the other two must surely know, but did not own up when you questioned them earlier. On that basis, they are all accessories after the fact.
Someone suggested they may have let someone else into the house who took your things... if that's the case they are careless and stupid, and also deserving of unemployment.
You let someone into your home, and they betray your trust, they have no place in domestic service. Do not blame yourself. There are honest hardworking people looking for work, better to employ them
