Strange things doing missing - DH to blame?

Odd things have strted going missing from our apartment and just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience...

I am currently 7 months pregnant, and accordingly have a nursery full of brand new baby stuff, still in packaging. I know exactly what I have purchased as have kept a spreadsheet of everything I have bought.

Anyway, was sorting out the room today and a few items are nowhere to be found, including a Bugaboo sun canopy ($400) and some reusable nappy sets ($500 approx).

Is it possible that out pt DH has takenthese to resell or obtain a refund? I am not the sort of person that loses things, and only 3 people have keys to our apartment.

She has been with us for 18 months and we have never had this sort of problem before. Should I ask outright, or simply ask if she has seen them?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Instances of helpers stealing things unfortunately do occur. Then again, I don't see how a DH would think you wouldn't miss the sun canopy. It is more likely that the things are just misplaced.

Don't ask outright yet. Leave her an out. Ask if she has seen them. See what her reaction is. It is quite possible she has simply reorganized. If she looks all guilty, try more pressing questions. Or you can just wait to see if the things magically reappear... If you are sure she is stealing, terminate her now. If the things reappear and were obviously stashed for future disposal, you can terminate her at the end of contract, which is coming up in 6 months.

I never have any reason to suspect our helper would take anything but she puts things away sometimes in places I don't look for them. We'll search like crazy for things (master remote control, ferry card, bike pump, a particular bra) with no luck and then as soon as we ask her she knows where they are and brings them right to us (in the cabinet opposite the dining table, in the drawer by the door, in the study on the shelf, in my underwear drawer but under other stuff).

Our brains aren't wired together and there is good logic in the places she puts things but sometimes we don't think the same and I can't find things. All I need to do is ask and 'voila', my stuff is before me!

Try to casually ask her in passing for a number of items that you wanted to look at/launder/lable, etc and include one of the significant missing items on the list. Either that or let her know (in a non accusatory way) that you can't find x, y and z and you'd like her to find them please. If she isn't able to produce the item then you might have somewhere to go from there.

Always start by asking if you has an explination for where the items have gone rather than accusing her so that if there is just simple misunderstanding involved, you don't hurt feelings by calling her a thief.

Good luck!

I agree with Adele... DH will tend to file things away in strange places. Asking your helper to locate the missing items would be the best approach in the first instance. Unfortunately theft do occur, but give her the chance to find them before passing judgment.
