Our DH who has been working for us for just over 4 months asked us the other day if she could use our mailbox. In particular, she wants our mailing address to apply for a regular mobile phone (and needs somewhere for the bill to be sent) as stored-value cards (which is what she has been using so far) are more expensive.
This never came up before so I was just curious about others' experiences? Is this something very normal or would we be exposing ourselves to any foreseeable risk by letting her access our mailbox?

She lives in your house, so your address is her address as well! It should be perfectly normal for her to use your mail box.

Our helper takes letters from the mailbox into our flat.
If you trust your helper, there's no problem with this, right? So apparently, in the short period of time she's worked for you, you still don't "trust" her. It's perfectly normal I guess, but each of us has a different view on this.

I don't not trust our helper, i am just trying to figure out if there's any reason not to give her my mailbox key. Also different ppl have told me different things, so I want to proceed with caution.
For instance, i have one friend whose helper was apparently penpals with a US prisoner (which i guess in retrospect is probably not a huge problem - at least unless the guy gets out and decides to visit her in Hong Kong!) Another friend told me that a helper can use the "proof of address" (her name on our address) to borrow money against that address and then afterwards, loansharks have a legitimate proof to continue hounding the houseowner for payment...etc etc
To be honest, she certainly hasn't proven herself untrustworthy so maybe i am worrying unnecessarily. (I guess i just want the reassurance that other employers are doing it as well...)

Well, she doesn't really need your mailbox key. You can simply give her the mail that has her name on it once you've picked it up. I'll chime in with others though and say that it's no biggie.

If your name isn't on the loan agreement, the loan sharks can annoy you, yes. But you are not legally responsible for payment. They'll back off once they understand you won't budge.

It depends on whether you trust your DH or not.
As she works and lives with you, I think sharing the same mailbox is quite a normal thing.

I dont see any big deal if your helper use your mail box,she lives in your house where else do you expect her to recieve her correspondence ? you are lucky she ask permision before she do so. that should credit to her honesty.. clap clap to your helper...

If you're really concerned, you can ask her to get e-bills (assuming she knows how to use a computer), which most phone companies prefer anyway. She can go to an Internet cafe on her day off and check her bills online. My helper goes to these cafes every week to talk to her family.

Our helper has always had a key and collected the mail. No problems
