A friend of my DH who was paid her month's allowance went to Central to send a remitance home. Some one stopped her whislt another person used a box cutter and cut her bag and sole $4000 her entire month's salary. Tell your DH to be very very careful in Central!

Perhaps it might be an idea to pay money into helpers account, by direct transfer, it aslo provides a record that the helper has been paid

Lots of helpers don't have bank accounts. Also they are generally only off on Sundays, a day that banks are closed.
A helper with money could go together with a friend. Also she could use a moneybelt.

This has bothered my so much. According to what I've heard today, the team of thieves was very professional. They were dressed well, spoke to the dh in a really polished way in her native language. She was "double teamed" as the other person stole her money. This happened in World Wide House. I guess the girls in her church went together and gave her some moeny, but not all. BTWit was 4,500 not 4000. Too sad, she is a widow.

this is not just happening to DHs. i know of 2 incidents in wanchai were a team of 2 guys does the same thing. they actually targeted women with small children or babies - i assume knowing it would be easier to distract them, they could not give chase and would be more worried about putting upa fight. one distracts while the other takes what they are after. it is a warning to us all. be aware.

We should all be on the lookout, but to be fair this sort of thing is much more common in, say, Rome than it is in HK.

Tagged-Team thieves are everywhere, and yes, mostly look "posh" and are very friendly. No enough caution could stop these "professionals" and sadly, it will happen again.
@axptguy, there's ATM, so a bank close is not an issue. The issue is, the last time I checked, one need HK$5,000. to open an ( basic) account and must have that maintaning balance . If you want a checking account ( as in my case) 1 grand is the MR or there's a HK$80.00 charge.
