I have gone through 2 employment agencies and the helpers obtained were random in quality. The agencies simply do not provide much useful testing or information; one's choice is based on looks, in a fully staged interview with prepared statements. Can anyone recomend an agency that either provides for more testing or at least seems to have a track record in attracting good employment prospects? Many thanks, JJSD

Most agencies get their candidates from here http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/helpers/
They have no opportunity to meet them and find out which ones are the best rather they search through the hundreds of listings and try to match you up with an appropriate helper.
Two options - save the agency fees and do the search yourself (processing is very simple and most helpers will be able to take care of most the paperwork for you) or contact Evelyn in our office 3579 5375 She and her assistant meet each helper who registers with us and know which ones are the best.
She charges the helpers 0 if she places them - her fees to employers are the lowest in HK.

Ed, how much vetting is done by you guys? How do you know they are 'the best'?
We employed our last helper through asiaxpat. It turned out she did not have the skills she claimed and was unable to fulfil the role set out at interview. After a lot of damage and expense and angry recrimination from the helper, we terminated the contract. She is back on the asiaxpat site, with untrue claims about her last job (ie with us) and untrue (according to what she told me) periods of work with the previous employer.
I emailed Evelyn asking how candidates are vetted or whether qualifications/references/skills are checked at all, but didn't get a reply.

Sorry to hear that your helper did not work out but we make no claim to ‘vet’ any of the applicants; we often have 800+ new helpers register with us each month so it would take an army to vet each one of them.
What we are able to do – and no other agency can do this because they have no contact with any of the hundreds of candidates who come through our office each week – is make recommendations based on our staff’s contact with each helper.
At the end of the day it is the employer who must ultimately vet potential hires by interviewing them and double checking their references.
I would suggest that nobody hire a helper without first calling at least one of their previous employers
