I just found out that my ex maid stole

I didn't renew my maid contract & she left in June. I now have a new maid at home. I just found out that all my foreign currencies (around C$1,300, a few hundred US$, some A$ & pounds) & HK$10,000 (all in $1,000 note) was disappeared. I kept this in an envelope & then put in a saft box. I & my husband think it should be my ex maid as it happened before my new maid came. All my red packets left from last year was disappeared & I thought it was my absent mind, I thought I unpacked them but it isn't my practice.

Now I don't have any proof & she has already left - she told me that she now works for a Japaness family. What should I do? Report to the police or just the immigration dept?

call her. Tell her that you will speak to her new boss and see if she has the right morals to return it. (This is assuming she did steal it)

"call her. Tell her that you will speak to her new boss and see if she has the right morals to return it. (This is assuming she did steal it)"

And if you were to follow this through? New boss immediately fires, police find no evidence and someone is deprived from providing for a family. Not to mention the possible backfire of such an approach. Sexual assault, violence accusations in return. Who knows.

You say the money was in a safe box. So how was she able to get into the safe box? There are a few questions that need to be answered. Yes you can call the police but without any evidence what can you tell immigration? If the police do not find money on her then no case, however you have no idea if it was her or not and to be honest with the money in a safe? You may get an innocent sent home, who knows?

The safe is just a small "fire proof" one, open with a key. As she knows our daily pattern, I'll spend almost half an hour in the tiolet after breakfast & the safe is kept in the study room. My husband said probably she took the key from my handbag & took the money from the safe then put the key back. It won't take long & I was still inside the tiolet. I know I can't do anything, I learn a lesson that I can't trust the maids. I should have sent her away once I decided not to renew her contract, so she won't have chance to steal. She had already tested us with the red packets & this time I know for sure the money was stolen as the C$ was brought home from my son in April.

Although you seem to imply that there were only you, your husband, and the ex-helper who had access to the safe, it still is a baseless accussation and you've even titled your thread with the conclusion!

Maybe you should look for some forex receipts around your house and see whether you've converted them into HK$? Or Maybe it was your husband? Or maybe you thew the cash away in your sleep?

another question: do you have kids? it would not be the first time someone accuses the helper but in the end it's the kids/youngsters who did it.

another point:

you are in the toilet, she goes to get the key, steal it, put it somewhere, put the key back, before you come out of the toilet. from the helpers point of view, this sounds like a very very risky theft to me. what if you come out of the toilet suddenly and she is in the process? unlikely but possible. she would be caught red-handed and go to prison. certainly not the way to line up a theft, in my view

i think you are right, you cannot do anything.

there is no concrete evidence that it was your former helper.

as cookie pointed out, the time frame for the possible theft is so risky and especially as the helper was planning on staying in hong kong and needs a clear record indicates that likely it was not her.

i hope you have confidence in your current helper.
